I just got this email from paypal. The email looks legit, uses my full name, but the link goes from a secure paypal site to a third party site managing the settlement. Is this legit or a scam?
Send it to Spoof@paypal.com. If that doesn't work, just go to the paypal site, there's a form there I think. I haven't heard anything about a lawsuit and 3rd party sites are usually scams.
zach, i dont know if what you got is a scam or not, but from what i've read, i think there is a class action suit against painpal right now. if you go to the ebay technical issues boards on ebay you can find out more about it there. i believe there is ( or soon will be ) a class action against ebay also. henry
i could'nt find anything on the ti board, but i did find a thread about it on the misc board, and one on the ebay motors board. i did'nt read it all, but there is a law firm in NY that is handling the claims. henry
It looks legit. It was a long read. Snopes says it's real: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/nothing/paypal.asp?print=y
I deleted mine without opening. Just read in the morning papaer that there is a settlement over account access.
I got the same. I've never had any problems with PayPal. It's made my Ebay buying much easier. I don't buy much, but it was nice when I got an incomplete item, the seller offered to refund me the cost of the missing parts + shipping. Which he did, and I just pocketed it, as it was 1/2 the cost of the item, and honestly, I didn't NEED that part anyhow. Plus manufacturer cost and shipping was not worth it. Had it not been for the potential for me to complain to PayPal, I think he would have just ignored my emails. And as for the class action suit, don't bother if you haven't had any problems described in the lawsuit. It only applies to people that have had problems with Paypal, account access, that sort of thing. So someone like myself who's had no problems at all, will get nothing. If you have had a problem, you get like, $50, unless the settlement money runs out, then you get less. If you had a more serious matter, you can do a bigger application, to get a bigger settlement. Out of $9 million in the settlement, over $3 million is going to the lawyers. So $6 million split up between the people with legitimate claims. The rest of the users that were at risk of having problems, get nothing. That's my problem with the lawsuit. If it were a car recall, you don't just recall the ones that are shown to be bad. You recall them all. Just because it didn't break, doesn't mean you weren't at risk of it breaking. Or maybe I'm just wanting to get my $1 share of the settlement that would probably be left after the buzzards (lawyers) get through with it.
I thought it I read in the email, though, that they are setting aside 1 million for people who can claim to be in the settlement, even though they never had a problem. Something about the fact that something wrong could have happened. Here is what it said: "2. Statutory Damage Fund Claimants The plan of allocation designates $1 million of the Net Settlement Fund to a "Statutory Damage Fund," to be distributed equally among all Fund Claimants who are not Dispute Resolution Claimants. This means that if you are a member of the Class and do not fall within the definition of a "Dispute Resolution Claimant," as set out above, you can make a claim for a payment from the Statutory Damage Fund. The Statutory Damage Fund provides compensation for potential statutory damages under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act ("EFTA"), 15 U.S.C. 1693 et seq. Statutory damages under the EFTA are limited by law to no more than $500,000 for any class of individuals claiming "the same failure to comply." Plaintiffs' counsel contended in the litigation and for purposes of settlement that PayPal was potentially liable for multiple failures to comply, a position PayPal vigorously opposed." If I read that right, everyone who has an account w/ paypal can put in a claim even if they never had a problem?
