I have a 1971 Skylark, 350,4bbl. I took my stock point distributor and put in a pertronix kit in. My question is, Will leaving the stock RESISTANCE feed wire to the distributor in place , have any affect on anything ? Thanks.

Which kit did you use? I believe all Pertronix units require a full 12v.

I believe the Ignitor II and Ignitor III require a full 12V. I just used the factory resistance wire to trigger a standard relay fed directly from the battery.

I the pertronix ignitor II and used the existing power wire that fed the points which is a resistance wire. My question is will the resistance wire work with the pertronix set up ?

It will most likely work, however according to Pertronix, for the setup to reach it's full potential, you should wire it up without the resistance wire so it sees battery voltage.

The Pertronix unit works best at a full 12 volts.

    Two ways to accomplish this:

    1. Easy way - Run a wire from the IGN spade on fusebox to the coil. Use an inline fuse holder with a 20a fuse. Wrap the resistor wire into the harness with electrical tape. Ran
my car like this for 5 years with no issue

    2. Right way - Remove the engine harness from the car, and replace the resistor wire with a regular wire. Or, M&H can build a harness for you with their HEI modifacation. I am running this now.

Be aware that the matching Pertronix coil makes it optimized.

I have the Pertronix III in my car - works great.

So does this mean that the stock power wire (resistance wire ) is not a constant 12 volt wire ?

Thanks again for the info. Just curious, What problems would occur if i ran the stock resistance wire to power the Pertronix? Would the car start ? Would there be a driveability issue ? Please let me know. This is an excellent learning experience.

I would expect decreased spark. It might start, but you would have problems I expect. Why would you want to test that theory?

I originally ran my Pertronix Ignitor III setup with the resistance wire. It's a different animal than the Ignitor II, but it idled poorly, and had a noticeable miss while cruising.

I wouldn't drive the car like that, I was wondering what the symptoms would be in case i run across this on another car in the future. If i knew what signs to look for, (Like fouled plugs or rough idle or hard start ect. ) it would be easier than cutting open a wiring harness to see if a new wire was run or if the original resistance wire is still being used.

A 5 second test with a voltmeter would be easier than that.
