Full on show car.....he lives 30 miles from me. Word was that he was getting goaded into making a pass with it and never brought it back to the GS Nationals for a long time. He re-pained it and it might have been there one time after the 84 event. Peace WildBill
About 10 years prior, JW. That's the problem with owning cars like mine. You can't drive them or risk at least 6 figures to repair if something would go wrong. Makes me nervous as heck to bring it out, let alone drive it. I have purchased a few nice "drivers" and even a couple "not so nice" drivers just to have something that people don't see everyday. My Skyhawk is an example. Does OK in a local show but does have it's share of warts. I really don't care about them anymore! Last year my brother in law was diagnosed with the Big C. Given 3-5 years at best. Around 15 years ago, Jodie and I test drove a Corvette. Been a dream of hers since before we were married. Promised I'd buy her one. Time passed and that promise went unfulfilled. Last spring I told her we were going over to my cousin's car lot in Troy, OH (I had looked it up, he had a Corvette in stock like she said she wanted). Came home with a 2005 C6 6 speed convertible in yellow. Nice car but not too perfect. We drive it every chance we get and it's tons of fun. We took it to Greenup, KY last fall to visit my aunt's grave and decided to visit my mother's side's graveyard while we were there. Mother's side's graveyard was up the hollar and over the creek, not made for a Corvette by a long shot. I was disappointed to say the least. On the way home, Jodie mentioned we should get a jeep and then we could visit the graveyard. Bought a 2008 4dr that won't make any difference it gets another scratch or 1000. Lots of fun too. So I completely understand why Jason feels as he does leaving a car out or being taunted to take chances that you know you shouldn't. Really do. The Skyhawk:
I feel ya Brad.....At least back in the day when I had my 70 X, I got to use it and enjoy it. 1980-1996. Always drove to the Nats, raced it 2-3 days a week at the track and didn't think twice about a long trip, with 2 baby seats in the back. Even let my wife take it to work on nice days. Before all that the original owner used it to haul rocks (long story), tow a camper to Ohio and go on ski trips to Canada! Now I'd be too worried about it like I was with my 72 GS455 sunburst yellow convertible after it got painted. Couldn't even go to a movie without going out and checking on it.....got a 72 GS350 that had ripped top, ripped driver seat and mediocre white paint.....had a blast with it. No worries....
Oh, I fully understand Brad.. if that car were mine, it would rarely see the light of day. Vette looks fun.. JW
I have a buncha stickers that are very close to the OP's avatar. Not identical, but close enough for guv'ment work.
Here’s another one of these threads…forgot about posting this one! Photos from the 1984 Nats <-- click here
Ok now I see the front custom grill and the car much better on the podium. The motor ran though if i'm correct? Wonder where the car is now..
If you have it in you maby build a clone of it to go to shows and post pics of the real deal Doesn't even have to be a numbers matching car, even a 350 70 GS. The rear spoiler will be tough but I think you mentioned you have a few extra front spoilers made just incase. Awful feeling to worry constantly.. At shows you have to worry when someone is doing a smoke show near you or I hope most are considerate.
In case ppl don't realize what you posred was a link (I didn't at first) - Thanks for posting & bringing it back: http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/photos-from-the-1984-nats.347144/
Thats stinks.. So much can go wrong while smoking the rear tires, the least being chunks of rubber flying off which can do a some real harm
Some people should just not have any cars with speed potential.. Sad that alot of spectators laugh at the wipe outs. At 7:10 in one driver did a 360 right in front off a cop car!
Two pages back I see the circle track used to be dirt and there was grass in the infield. Interesting
Over the years since 1983 I have driven the GSX to the GS Nationals until I purchased an open trailer in 2009. My kids and then grandkids have all ridden in the backseat with me to attend. I even let the grandkids eat blue icee slushies on the way. My daughter, Lindsey, couldn't believe I let them have blue slushies, but hey, it matched the exterior.
