Thanks all for letting me onto your board. I'm obviously one of the "other guys". But let me just say that I appreciate ALL musclecars. I currently belong to two other boards and this question has everyone stumped. I own a 1970 W-30 4-spd (that's irrevelant to my question I just like saying that:laugh: ). The broadcast sheet confirms this and I have been able to confirm my dates, castings, stampings etc. with the exception of this one issue. On the broadcast card and the cowl tag, my interior trim code 930 (black vinyl buckets) is preceded on both by the letter "Z". No one has been able to tell me what this may mean. I've been told that it is probably gonna deal with an issue from Fisher Body. I do know this.... -the car is not stripe, radio or headrest delete. I don't have mats but those could have disappeared over the years. - it's not a zone car Any Fisher Body guys here or anybody else that may have any insights? I'd appreciate it. Thanks all.
Black Gold (Brian Ehler) may be able to help you on that. I'm not that familiar with codes, especially Fisher Body ones.
Lansing. Mr. H, I've already discussed w/Mr. Ehlers since I belong to both 442.com and ROP. Came to another GM board on the recommendation of others in hopes of finding a Fisher Body guy from back in the day. Thanks anyways.
Good luck. Like Jim asked, is it a Lansing built car? They did a lot of very strange things at the BOP plants back then.
Tried doing a search on him this a.m. Alli I got was three results referring me back to here (his name was mentioned) and one for Turbo Buick V6.com. Anyone know how I can reach him?
Thanks Dave and Jim!---However I only know about Texas 442's....you guys didn't know it but the 442's shipped to TX were faster than all the others.:bla: Being the biggest state outside of Alaska GM realized people down here had more ground to cover....accordingly they "double blueprinted" the Texas bound cars. Also--the cars are better here anyway----they have less wear....there's a saying I have heard: If the world ever comes to an end, come to Texas--everything happens 10 years later here. Thus, I figure, in addition to being faster the cars have 10 years less wear and tear on them down here. I've read Ken's thread here and on ROP...I really don't have a clue...but what do you expect..I'm in Texas.uzzled: Oh--I figured it out Ken---the Z indicates the car came equipped with a Gas Tank Pad...you probably should get a new one. On another subject we finally shot some new black paint on the firewall of my buddy's 70 W31 yesterday. Just an engine compartment resto but still plenty of fun. It's getting harder to lure these guys into yanking the bodies off the frame anyway. I'll try to get some pics soon. Thanks
 Is that Dave Bunch's old W31 at one time? Seem to remember something like that. Ken, There are a bunch of advisors in the Olds Club of America for the various types of cars. I'm sure the W30 or 1970 advisor could help you or aim you to someone who can. Other than that, I also have no clue. Patton may be right about the fuel tank pad on your car since it's a W30. W31's had them deleted along with lots of other weight savings things like body sealer, primer under the paint, aluminum fasteners, clips on the fuel and brake lines, all crossmembers in the frame, helium in the tires, foam in the seats, baffles in the mufflers, fluids in the trans, diff, and engine, washer bottle delete, sway bars made of thin wall tubing, etc. etc. Made them real fast. I'd go ahead and get one of those repro pads from him just to be safe. They also are great floor coverings for your garage and driveway. I'm sure he'll give a big discount for the large quantity order. :beers2:
Welcome to V8Buick, another442guy. I'm sorry I don't remember your name, but I do remember discussing the "Z" code with you in the past. I've been holding off responding to your most recent posts on other boards, because I've nothing new to add and wanted to see what others might say. My triple-black '70 W-30 also has the Z code. For those who haven't seen it, it appears on the Fisher Body plate as "TR Z930" and on the Fisher Broadcast Card with the Z in the "SPCL" (special?) box preceding 930 in the "TRIM COMB" box. 930 in this case is black Strato Buckets. It sure would be nice to find someone who used to work at Fisher Body in Lansing back in the day. On a somewhat related note, I've always wondered what the numeral 2 means in the "PP" box on the Fisher Broadcast Card. I've seen it on a lot (all?) 1970 cards.
Yes Dave--my buddy bought the car from Dave Bunch. Talked to Dave a little about it at the Nats...now we have to prep a 4 core support for the car as he told me it should have had one and he was scratching his head wondering why the car didn't have one when he got it. I had to break the news to him...Dave B bought the car from a guy here in Austin. When it got sold it had a NOS 4 core radiator support in it. Before it went up for sale, the nice piece got yanked and a somewhat banged up old 3 core support got put in it. It was quite a quick, hack job...the lower brackets had to be moved and they were each held on with a sheet metal screw. All this happened back in the late 80's I think (when Dave B got the car). The car is pretty cool however...it was color changed to Rallye Red. It's originally a silver/black stripe car and that's how it will go back SOMEDAY. Not a common color and really looks great on the "S" style body. We found areas where the original silver paint is still on the sides of the firewall (we pulled the fenders etc for this engine redo/engine compartment redo). Sorry about the hijack Ken... but us Olds nuts take every opportunity to talk about Olds's on this Buick site:shock:
Thanks for the replies. Forgot to set my profile so I'd be notified of activity on my post. Stopped by for a look and WOW! Thanks to Dave H, PGlade and BlackGold who have listened to me beat the "dead horse" senseless. I was beginning to think that the Z indicated a triple black (int, roof, stripes) but found a guy with a black car, intrior and white stripes. I've definitely narrowed down to interior difference. Fisher Body related. And more than likely a deletion rather than an addition of something (thanks Kurt). What all do you sell Mr Glade? Also. I was born in Del Rio on Laughin AFB about 45 I mean 25 years ago. PP/2 on Broadcast card? Could it indicate a top and bottom color difference? Mine has a 2. Code 28 with black vinyl top. Whatdayathink?
Mr. Glade????!!!! I'm only a couple years older than you....please!! don't rub it in!:TU: If you are undertaking a resto then you may have interest in these Ken. You asked. Thanks http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=136276&highlight=gas+tank+pad
Nope, PP/2 must not mean different upper and lower paint. Mine is black for both, and no vinyl. Besides, the Fisher Body broadcast card already list both lower and upper paint/vinyl/top. OK, now I've got to plead ignorance (not hard to do). I used the term "triple black" because I thought it meant black lower paint, black upper paint, and black interior. But now you're suggested it refers to black body with black stripes. I've never seen a definition but thought it sounded cool, so I used the term anyway. Does anyone know the official definition of "triple black?" o No:
I think you had it right. Triple black has always meant black top, black lower, and black interior in every circle I've been around (over many years). I would think black stripes on a black car would be pretty subtle and rather unimpressive. Check out the white stripes on this triple white car: o No: o No: o No:
Try Kurt S who runs Camaros.org (kurts2@gmail.com)...he's been researching Camaros for years and years, and Fisher was pretty universal on a lot of their info, so maybe he'll have an idea.
