I am trying to decide what and when to put some meats under my 69. I have looked at many threads and wondered about how big I can go. For me the bigger the better. I would like to see some pics of the guys with big tires in the 68-69 wheel wells. Would you all mind posting some with the tire info and if you had to modify anything? I am thinking about 275's with mt drag radials...would go 295 if possible but most people seem to think that wont fit without modification. Pics please? Thanks guys!
Mike, 275"s will work on a 69 with stock back spacing 7" wheel. You will need to trim the wheel lip to the moulding screws. Dave
Thanks Dave. The 275's are my best option at this point. They will work on a 7" wheel? Didn't know that. Regardless of what will fit or not...i would love to see pictures of people's set ups. Just for fun and to get a good idea of what it would look like. Thanks Guys!:TU:
Now that is what I'm talking about!!! :eek2: Those are gianormous. Do you have any trunk left? lol nobody else have pics? o No: Thanks.
275/60/15 on a 15" ralley wheel worked on my 69. I had to cut the wheel lip to the moulding screws. Dave
I'd guess that 68 doesn't spend much time on the street. So are you talking a street, strip, or street/strip car?
Mine will be set up for street/strip...but more street than strip. I would like to have the ablility to take it down the track without hookup problems on occasion as well as stomp the streets on a tire that is still comfortable. I know the drag radials are what i want...but i would like to just see different sizes and sets ups. Stance is a big issue for me...and having the right combo of tires is a big part of that. right now i am on 14 inc rims with 215s up front and 235s in the rear...
I'd suggest looking thru the 68/69 section under the Members Rides forum, should be plenty of pics there.
The 68 in the pic does see some street time believe it or not. A lot of time was spent by the owner (a friend of mine) getting the rear seat massaged to look completely factory when you look in the car. My 68 has 255/60's on 15x8 rims with 5.5" of backspace. A 275/60 SHOULD fit if a 15x8 w/ 5" of backspace was used but the wheel lip would almost certainly need to be trimmed. A 5.5" backspace rim had the wheel weights just skim the bottom shock bolt so check that area. If you end up with tires rubbing in turns a rear sway bar can sometimes fix that. Lastly every car is different and you'll have to measure everything before buying rims/tires.
I would never cut the wheel well of my Orange car. So I put the 275/50-15's on 7" auto drags with 5" backspacing.. The stock 4 1/2" back spaced rims put them into the outer well. My Blue car is cut and the 275/60-15's will only fit on 8.5" rims 5" backspaced. Here's the 4 1/2" stock rim
Thanks David. Those look sweet and exactly like what i am looking for. I would prefer to not trim or cut the fender lip too... And i will have to measure 5 times I am sure...
Actually not many of good stance pictures where you can really see how the tires look. Pics like David's are exactly what i was looking for.:TU:
damn...didnt know the lower quarters made a big difference in rim bs so i take it a 275-60 on a 15x8 with 4.5bs wont fit on a 68 gs that has a 12bolt swap in lol....damn
275/60's went on the back of mine but with 15X8 with a 5.25" backspace from Specialty Wheels. That's the way to go ... no cutting. Until you get the fever for a set of 295's!
