Does anyone have an original 70-72 Buick 455 exhaust manifold bolt in excellent condition? I need a picture of the original logo/design/markings on the bolt head. All my bolts are too rusted to clearly see the markings. If you have one, please email me a pic. Thanks!
Greg I have some NOS and I think I posted a pic with theGM package in our GSX resto post. We hope to see you in Salem. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=55125&highlight=GSX+resto
I might add I think there were at least two different lengths plus a stud in 70. I have never studied the other years but I think that carried over for a while. I need a full set for a concours resto myself but so far no luck.
Here is the picture Jim is referring to... <img src="http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=41634&stc=1">
Greg I will try to post a pic of the one on the left which is NOS and still has the peculiar lock attached. The center is recessed. Inscribed on top of the recessed head is a concentric circle which has a cross that describes 90 degrees in all four quadrants. In place of one of the four arms of the cross is the letter "S". If you are going to have some made I can loan you a specimen.
Greg, sorry I couldn't get you a picture of a good used bolt. The guys here have NOS bolts and have perfect candidates for a picture. Good luck Greg!
The bolts we have been using... I don't have a nice original bolt to compare to, but this is what we have been using for Buick exhaust manifolds lately. I believe it is about the closest thing you will find that is still available. There are enough sizes available to do everything except the really long bolt near the rear on the passenger side (which doesn't even show on A/C cars). This catalog lists them as a Ford part Flynbuick: does this head marking look like your NOS bolt, from your description it sounds very close. We had these on a car in the concours class this year and Duane did not make a deduction so they must be "close enough". Once installed it's hard to see the head markings.
Jim, Is the bolt head you pictured the long one with the fluting at the thread end, or from one of the shorter ones. The original bolts, for our years, had the fluting on the end, so that is the one Greg needs a head picture of. Duane
Duane As indicated above it is the one on the left in the pic I posted above. The shorter ones are a little different in the head desgn but also appear to be like two of the short ones in Buquick's pics. Specifically, the upper row left and bottom row middle.
Gary, I remember you showing me that catalog when we were visiting you at your shop. What an excellent find and those are the bolts we are all looking for! Good job Gary!
I thought I'd throw these up just for the fun of it. I got these from one of Scott's (I think) auctions.
Yeesh, this thread brings back bad memories of all those ugly rusted out exhaust manifiold bolts I've had to bust off in the head even after soaking them in PB blaster for weeks at a time. Used nothing but stainless steel for 13 years and had zero problems.
That is true,Gary. But for those of us that are on the stock appearing and purist fringe need these bolts to be correct. Of course,to go the stainless steel route is the way to go, but by no means are they correct and do not look like the originals. I believe this thread has started a new trend for people that have brand new bolts on their exhaust manifolds, and I for one, will be one of those people.
Yeah, for a concourse resto it probaly wouldn't matter much because those cars are normally driven very little. I was thinking more along the lines of a car that gets driven a lot then stainless is the way to go. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that pitchure is out of a catalogue from AMK Products. There phone number is 1-540-662-7820. They sell all types of automotive fasteners. There catalogue costs $8.
Amk Yes the bolts are available from AMK Products. The wesite is www.amkproducts.com Their catalog is very nice.
