If i figured id start a new thread instiead of posting this in the Bad Coil one..Got the HEI in(Had no fire Points setup, see previous thread), THe car has spark now!! yeah, but it wont run. All it does is spit, and backfire like the firing order is wrong...But we've got the #1 cylinder up..with the rotor facing it...Put the plugs clockwise..Done everything 3 times...Still same problem..HEI was pulled from running car, so its good...Me, and everyone ive talked to is clueless.

cray1801 Too much is just right.

    Two questions:

    1. Did you install a new 12 AWG (or larger) wire from the backside of your fuse box to your HEI? The HEI needs full voltage to operate properly.

    2. Were you on the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder before you dropped the HEI dist. into place?

I know these are basic questions, but they need to be answered first.

Be sure you have the #1 cylinder up on the compression stroke.
Otherwise you will be 180 off

    I'm gonna bet you're 180 off....
take out spark plug #1, and turn it till you feel it push air out... block it with you're thumb or something... just cause the timing mark is at TDC doesn't mean the motor is TDC on the compression stroke, it could also be TDC on exhuast stroke....

I always run into the problem of being one tooth off. You think you have it just right but it's not. It should be a simple thing to install, but it usually is a pain in the:moonu: for me.

It's too late now, but for future reference, this is what I do. Remove the cap from the old distributor and positively note the position of the rotor. Remove old dist. Then install the replacement distributor with the rotor EXACTLY the same way the old one was positioned. Not only will it be installed right the oil pump drive will line up and the dist will seat to the block right away(not that it's a major issue). Almost like a little reassurance.

Hope some of this helps, I know it can be extremely frustrating unless you do it frequently.
