Hi from MN, decided to have 2ea. sets of rear tires/wheels for my 1969 Skylark, 1 set for town/strip and a set for long trips. So when out to the local "pull your own parts" wrecking yard in Savage MN (101 salvage). Started with the S10/GMC/Blazer stuff, also had along a axle from my 68 chevelle 12 bolt rear end, to find correct size wheels. Located 4X4 Blazer wheels stamped 15x7JJ that would fit if the center hole was enlarged a little with a die grinder. Purchased 2ea. wheels with 1 a p235/75/r15 tire and 1 with a p235/70/r15 tire. Both wheels were 15x7JJ with 5 1/2 backspacing. Tried both wheel/tires on the Skylark after opening up the center hole just enough to fit on the axle. Having a loose axle to keep checking helped a lot. Do not try this with a file!
Then found out the wheel hit the lower shock mount bolt, Removed the bolt and figured that cutting the bushing in half would give the proper clearance. To test this in my Buick lab. installed washers, now the wheel spins ok.
The "70" series tire was too close to the inner sheet metal, apx. 3/8 " clearance. The "75" tire has about 1/2" clearance and with one wheel on the ground and one wheel raised with the jack the clearance is about 1/4" with the "75". This is with the 8.2 standard axle, the 12 bolt will go in later.
So will use the Blazer wheels (painted gloss black) for long trips with P235R75X15 tires and this should help in fuel with the 455 engine/ 3.55 gears.
Planing on having my original 14" wheels custom made for smaller/ wider tires for around town/strip. Will try to post some pictures.
