    Hey Jim...

In the last 2 days I have had 2 pop ups happen on here. One when I entered this board, and one when I entered The Bench forum.
    Anybody know what's going on?

  2. Jeff, do a search of the board for "pop-ups" and you will find a thread about this. It isn't coming from the board. Most likely a program was planted on your hard drive from another web site you've been to, and it causes the popups, if I remember that topic correctly.

I'm not getting any on my system.

Thanks David. Yes, I'm aware of that thread. But I thought I'd mention it again.

Anyone know what kind of program I can look for to delete on my harddrive?

It was a car insurance popup that had Internet Explorer in the title bar.

There are certain websites that can install a DLL without your knowing it. It is run within Windows and is run as "rundll" .

I too had one pop up a week or so ago when I reinstalled Zone Alarm Pro....... I caught the app and denied internet access to it. Download the free version of zone alarm........the pro version is only $39 also..... a must have now adays if your surfing. You can't trust any site anymore security wise.
You might even check task manager for Rundll being run. In XP you can even see if the system loaded it or if your user access loaded it in. I don't know which DLL it is yet though. If you find it, let us all know.

    Yardley,

You can download and run a nice piece of software called "AdAware" to get rid of all nastiness on your computer. You can probably safely remove what it finds, I have never had any problems with it..
    find it here:

I use Black Ice. I had ZoneAlarm Pro, but it was too cumbersome to setup and get right. ZAP really is a great program if you want to mess with settings and determining what to allow in and out. It is very robust, but it was giving me problems downloading and surfing, and even gave me fits with Norton updates.

I mess with PCs all day, and at night I prefer not to. That's Riviera time...

    I'll look for the dll...

    adaware.

ad aware has worked well for me a few times.

if you you use kazaa or kazaa light or other P2P sharing program you may have problems with the program later if you delete the wrong thing.

you can go to www.download.com and find adaware.

All these 'fixes' for everything.. I just don't get it.. Why even open yourself up to invasion by rogue people/sites.. Those who use IE and Outlook are by default saying, "sure, I'm open".

Rogue apps are made for easily exploitable programs. There's "nothing" more exploitable then Microsoft applications. Instead of adding to the resource eating pool and drive munching of additional apps to help save the day, why not just change what you use in the first place. Seems the idea that Microsoft and Intel had of invading the consumer with "here use this, it's already there and it's better!" has worked over the years... Is Microsoft better? Is Intel better? Perhaps 10+yrs ago you could argue a point with Windows v3.. But today, those arguments are a farce. No longer valid, plain ol bs...

I won't tell you what to use... Instead I'll offer this.. Head to Download.com, TuCows.com, HotFiles.com and search around for Web Browsers and E-Mail Clients.. There's more choices then you think out there, 90% of which are better then the crap M$ gives you for free. Not to mention, some of the options are themselves freeware..

I'll step off the box now and let everyone make up their own mind.

I use a browser called "Mozilla". Have a search for that.

It has a checkbox that will prevent any windows being opened unless you open them, it makes the internet infinately more enjoyable.

It also has "tabs", which comes in very handy for reading through v8buick.com.

    what i try to use

yep mozilla is what i try to use.

    www.mozilla.org.

some websites dont like mozilla though.

opera is really good too and can fake what it is to a webpage. you can say it was opera, netscape, IE4,5, and a few others. some websites ask for what browser your running.
