POR-15 prep for inaccessible areas - how do you do this?

    Dear V-8 Buick paint pros,

I would like provide some protection for the hood recess where the hood ornament is secured on my 1965 Buick Special. I bought myself a POR-15 starter kit and figured I could just follow the instructions and solve my problem. Here is the target area to be painted:

My problem is with the preparation products that come with my POR-15 starter kit: Marine Clean and Metal Ready. Both these products should be rinsed with water. That is extremely difficult to do on that recess of the hood. I certainly would wipe these area down with a wet brush or something, but actually flushing the surface with a stream of water just isn't practical.

What are the experiences of you'all with these products? Could I just apply them and wet the surfaces with a paint brush say and accomplish the goal? or do these products require the sort of extensive rinsing that I cannot do in this case? Is there some other sort of prep I could try? - other products that would allow me to get the surface ready for the POR-15 without requiring a lot of rinse water? Looking at the surface, sure looks like a metal surface with rust. Whatever paint might have been there see seems gone. Is there any hope of mechanically cleaning the surface, removing all grease with a solvant like mineral spirits and going with POR-15 after that?

One other question while I'm at it. This location will basically see no ultra-violet light. So the problem of POR-15 getting damaged by UV light doesn't exist. What would you'all recommend as a final coat? Could a quick coat of garden variety Rustoleum type paint do the trick or should I be more aggressive?

Thanks as always for the good advice to be found here! :Smarty:

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

Just Rustoleum would be fine there too. Think about it, it took 40 plus years for that little bit of oxidation to form.

yea not worth all that fuss spray some aspho in there or some of the new wd40 rust inhibitor let dry and and hit it with rustoleum, will be protect it for another 50yrs, no way I would put water in there just gonna create more problems potentially

No reason for overkill (Re: POR-15 prep for inaccessible areas)

Dear Mark, hugger, and V-8 Buick warriors against rust,

[IMG] . . . . Awe shucks, how I can play with my POR-15 starter kit if I get advice like this? . . .

I have to agree though, seems like overkill given how well that area has held up. I'll take your advice and simply clean it up and paint with Rustoleum rusty metal primer and top coat it. That should be enough protection so that I can put back the hood ornament.

    Thanks for the advice!
