Gents, I have a 1965 Buick Skylark 2 door post sedan with a 225 ci V6, 'Glide and an open axle and want to put a posi in it - mainly becuase I'm putting in a 425 dual quad LX motor. So far I think I've identified the axle as a 10 bolt 8.2 rear but am getting comfused as to what exactly a posi unit is [I understand the basics] and how it works. I have been advised that Iit has 28 spline axles and a 27 spline pinion. What is the differnece please? Can anyone out there please educate an axle newbie?? The difficulty is I am in Ireland and am planning on coming over to the US on a trip in early December and taking the posi unit back with me on the plane but what one to get to ensure it fits right since I can't really send it back! Has anyone any experience of taking posi units onto a plane, either as hold baggage or even as hand baggage? How heavy are they? I din't even realise at first they they work in conjunction with the gears in the rear end - I thought they replaced them! - and I've been advised to put in a 3.55 gear. Is there a stamping on it I need to look for? Does anyone have any advice on what posi unit to get and what to pay? and what else to get whilst I am at it ? - axle bearing rebuild kit, gaskets, upper and lower strut mounts [in poly?], better springs? Since I've got to take the axle out to take it to a shop here in Ireland to get the unit put in [I've been advised against doing it myself because of the high chance of getting the settings wrong and trashing the thing] if I am going to all this trouble of taking it out, I'll paint the floor of the car and generally sort out the whole of this area at the same time. All advice greatfully appreciated!! thanks & regards Nick :TU:
Posi in a bag I'll leave the rest of your questions to someone else but will say I carried a 12 bolt posi unit from the states to England in a bowling ball bag. It fit perfectly and I didn't have any problems but that was pre 9-11. I still don't see why you would have a problem though. I checked it in as checked luggage. Good luck.
Posi weight It was do-able for me. I don't remember what it weighed (I also had a ring and pinion with it) but it wasn't that heavy. If you by chance buy a second hand unit I would wrap it in a plastic bag so it doesn't drip any old fluid out of the bag. Good luck getting through customs without paying any duty! :beer
Thanks Bob, thanks Monkey, Yes, I think I'll need gears as well. I plan on going over to the shed after lunch to check the rear end ratio. Monkey, that's part of the plan - legal as I would be buying it in the US but now I'm more concerned about someone taking it off me thinking it is a bomb or something!!! I'll have to check with the airline and check they are OK with it. It may have to go hold baggage. I brought back a set of shocks for my Fleetwood and when I got home to unpack the bag I found that somewhere along the route [US side I think] they had taken them out of my luggage- no note nothing!! However now I'm in Ireland they are not so worried about the customs charges thing, just getting it back in one peice. BTW - where are/ were you in the UK? regards nick
Lock it up Put a small lock on whatever you bring your stuff back in, thats what I did. I'm in the states now, Bowling Green, Ky. I was stationed in England (US AirForce) for believe it or not 20 years. 13 yrs at RAF Alconbury, 4 yrs at RAF Lakenheath, and 3 years at RAF Bentwaters. I really miss the beer and women! :beer
Monkey, Interesting tale - thanks - yes a few things to miss about England! Bowling Green - that's where they make Corvettes right? Are you involved with that? Still miss my old red '86. Well my gears turned out to be 3.08 open. Now the search is on for a posi to fit to bring back when I come out to Boston/ Portland/ LA/ Montreal at the weekend and come home on the 16th. cheers Nick
