really like the 3.42 rear but want to find a way to get rpm down at 70 mph. searches seem to indcate that going to a 2004r could be the best solution...

do external overdrive units work? other solutions? a change is torque converter wont help, will it?

A lot depends on how big an rpm change you want to make. Taller rear tires will lower cruise rpm slightly, but for a significant change, different gearing is in order, either rear axle or final transmission drive ratio or both. Aftermarket overdrives are also a possibility, though expensive.

A 200R was never designed to handle your car's engine so it would have to be built really well with the best parts. A Gear Vendors OD unit will use your existing trans. Both will require some modifications to your car. If you have someone do either conversion I suspect the tab may be 3-4K.

I spent about 3000.00 on my GV including installation and new drive shaft. That was at least 5 or 6 years ago. I suspect it would cost just as much to build a 2004R to withstand a healthy BBB, and buy a good torque converter. The GV in stock form can handle 1200 HP.

isnt there a way to change the transmission 3rd gear from 1:1 to .78? and then change 2nd from 1.50 or so to 1.0?

REALLY??? You have to be kidding. You swapped the gears and NOW you want to kill the gear...LOL> Now that is totally hilarious... You should have left it alone. LOL

I ask customers this stuff all the time...WHAT are you going to do the most drive the car or tear A** light to light.

Now your going to band-aide the car around the gear ratio... I think your setting up a HUGE money pit.

TORQUE CONVERTER WILL NOT SOLVE THIS - THE ONLY TRUE WAY TO GET YOUR UPPER RPM DOWN AGAIN IS OVERDRIVE TRANS. 1250-3000 SOLUTION. BEST WAY IS TO PUT THE OTHER GEARS BACK IN IF THAT IS WHAT YOU DO MORE.

When you put overdrive tranny or add on then you will have a vibration your going to be chasing for years. Or the unit will be too weak to hold the weight and torque the car puts out.

HOW many RPMS are you at? Of course your not going to be use to the higher R's, BUT if the car did it back in the day it will be fine. MIGHT HAVE to Get use to it or swap the gears back out. :)

BOY I deal with this ALL THE TIME....

I did the 3.07:1 to 3.42 Posi swap in my Wildcat with the same results- love the 3.42 but think I will eventually put the highway gears back in.

As usual Jim (Monzaz) is bang on with great advice.

Although, you should be able to fit a 2" taller tire in there and get the revs down on the highway.
