Anyone here old enough to remember back when HotRod and Car Craft magazine used to do cover stories titled "Run 11.99 @ 110 mph for $2500"

Aaaah, the golden age of hot rodding

Now admittidly, today 11.99 aint as quick as it was back in the 70's, also back then $2500 was a lot of money, but it was fun to read the articles.

It usually involved a light weight body like a Nova, a BBC out of a motorhome, an over the top "rumpety-rump" cam, and a set of slicks... My goodness how times have changed

But seriously, lets pretend that you just bragged to your teen-aged son's ricer friend that you could build a faster car than his POS honda for LESS money than he spent on his stereo--- $3500, and then lets just pretend that "ricer boy" pulls out his wallet and hands you $3500, and in his arrogant punk-a$$ little attitude says "Prove it 'bud!"

OK, so here you hava a clean slate. Nothing to start with but the cash- no full race chassis sitting behind the garage to "cheat" with or anything.... 100% made from scratch.

    Here's the parimiters:
Has to be street legal, and driveable- so no 455's bolted to a go-cart
Has to be able to whoop his honda's 11.99@110mph [on NOZZZ]
Has to look HALFWAY presentable... So no yugo's as a platform, no matter how cheap they are.

And since were day-dreaming, let's pretend that YOU have the mechanical abilities to actually assemble the engine, and weld the chassis together. Also, your garage is fully equiped with all the equipment and tools required to build such a car.

You can leave out all the little nickle and dime stuff, like belts, hoses, oil, etc,,, but anything that costs over $20 must be accounted for. Oh, one more thing, the drag strip is 50 miles from home, so it has to be street worthy enough to make it there and back. Other than that, the sky's the limit.

So let's hear your best [hypothetical] budget buildup...

I'll post this and come back later with my own build-up... :TU:

I have an issue of Grassroots Motorsports from within the last couple months. They had a budget of $2005 to build a car that could all around perform (1/4 and corner). They went to the junkyard and bought an old honda crx, a wrecked corvette and a fullsize ford van. They put the corvette motor in the crx and used the vans rear-end. They used a couple other parts. Ill scan the article in a little while if anyones interested....
