Can anyone point me in the right direction of a brake problem i'm having on my 1969 Riviera when I touch the brake pedal when even going 5mph in reverse or forward the brakes grab and about throw you through the windshield i'm thinking maybe a power booster problem my vacuum for the booster comes off the back of the intake but there's a T in the line that runs my headlights , transmission, and vacuum trunk opener plus heater controls i'm wondering if the vacuum pressure to the brake booster is too low?because of splitting the vacuum,I have to use the one port I have on the intake and T it cause using a Edelbrock carb don't have enough vacuum ports or do you think maybe brake cylinder problem I would sure appreciate some help. if its a vacuum problem do you think I should use a electric vacuum pump? after the car runs a while and builds up vacuum problem seems not as bad

I'd want to know just how much vacuum your pulling. On my 68 the booster is run off its own line and the other stuff is drawing off a separate port going into a distribution block on the firewall. Anyway I dont think low vac or even to much vac would cause your issue. have you looked at your shoes. are they adjusted properly?

I have a distribution block on firewall too but it gets vacuum from the back of intake from a T as does the boster

I once had a situation where the brake had only a tiny bit of drag. Then, as the brakes got hot, something surely expanded, and the calipers literally turned red and warped.

Maybe a little bit of drag is not a good thing?

I had what I think is the same problem with a '79 Trans Am. Press the pedal would 'slam' the application into effect; no soft touch possible. Once it happened I could modulate pressure from that point to complete lock just fine. Rebuit booster cured it. Try disconnecting the booster and see if 'manual' is progressive.

You shouldn't be running your headlights off the brake booster. Easy way to tell if your theory is correct- remove the T and plug it off. Leave all the other stuff disconnected and give it a test drive.

When I was 15 I learned to drive in my grandma's 68 LeSabre. It had brakes like that as new! Barely touch the pedal and it would stop. I miss that, I am trying to get that kind of brake feel.

    Tighten up your brake shoes.
There should be more than just a "little drag".
They are most likely sloppy and binding when applied.

    Give it a try.

    Take Care
