Finally getting ready to pull the 340 out of my 67. I plan to pull the engine and tranny together. I assume I need to pull the cross member out. Whats the best way to hold the back of the transmission to keep it from dragging on the floor?

Plug the rear end of the trans so it doesn’t dump fluid!
    Been there done that.

Get yourself an engine tilter. Hooks to your engine crane.

    A floor jack can help.
Lift under the crossmeber as you are raising the engine.

Having a balance bar also helps, but you can lift as long as the point of balance is about where the back of the carb is on the intake.

If you don’t have an engine leveler then use a ratchet strap to adjust the tilt as needed. You shouldn’t need to remove the crossmember. I suggest either draining the trans fluid via the pan or find a spare driveshaft yoke to stick in there to contain the fluid. When removing the engive mounts remove the long bolt that runs front to back not the other bolts to the frame or block. Use a sharpy to mark how the hinges fit in the hood, makes it easier to line up after. Remove the trans lines from the trans and also from the rad so they don’t get linked and bent. Don’t miss the ground wires. I like to remove the carb so it stays clean. With the trans connected you can run a chain from the rear of each cylinder head and it is close for the right balance. With the trans removed go diagonal from the rear of one head to the front of the other on a diagonal.

Thanks! Yup, got a plug in the back of the trans! I think I have everything disconnected but the engine is not moving forward. I thought maybe the cross member was catching. I'll have to look some more and see where it's catching.
I have a leveler but don't think I have enough headroom for the boom with the trans attached. I'm using a carb plate.

take some pics? Something is hanging up, trans or engine mounts?

Ha - it was the y pipe. The car has a single exhaust and I thought I had the pipe low enough but that's where it hung up. For those who don't know, the pipe snakes between the oil pan and the convertor dust cover.
And I did miss the ground strap behind the passenger head - thanks for the reminder!
While I did have a plug in the tranny output hole it was dislodged when dragging the tranny through the tunnel. It spilled about a teaspoon of fluid which of course made a 5 foot puddle under the car! Nasty stuff!

I thought it was pretty funny! It’s the only thing they can hold against us no matter what we do
