    Your comments please:

I have a 68 Skylark Custom with a 350 4bbl, newly rebuilt all stock, bored 30 over, haven't put manifold, carb or dist on yet, I'm preparing the car to put the engine back in now.

I bought this car not running so I don't know the condition of the original Q-jet but assumed I would at least re-build it.

I'm not that concerned with keeping this car absolutely stock.

So my question is... Do I go withe the Q-jet as is and see how it runs, rebuild it, or go to a Edlebrock (1406, recomended by a chain store guy with a Chevelle). Drivability, performance and economy are all considerations.

I will probably use the stock headers for now.

    Your constructive comments are appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DanB

Stick with the Q-jet. However, I would be hesitant to start a new engine with an unknown carb. Do you have access to a running Q-jet equipped car to try it out on first? Or else send it to one of the reputable Buick carb guys for a rebuild

    Thanks,

Thats pretty much the direction I want to go. Good point about starting a new rebuild with an unknown carb.

Do you have any expierience with the Edlebrocks?

    Q Jet!

Those Edelbrocks are OK, but they are an old 1960's technology. Q jets are a better choice as long as the throttle shafts aren't worn out.

That edelbrock is listed at summit as being a 600cfm. If so, it's too small. You would be much better off with a good rebuilt 750 qjet. The edelbrocks have problems with fuel sloshing also. I had a problem with a car stalling when braking hard. Qjet is a much better carb when tuned right.

Or you could buy an Edelbrock Q-jet clone. Summit has a VERY few left. EDL-9975.

Looks like I have a couple of options re the Qjet.

Does anyone know about HITE carb rebuilders? Their name popped up on a couple of web searches. Rebuild-restore yours or you can buy theirs re-manufactured.

Upon further inspection my carb has a re-manufactured sticker on it.

    Next I'll check Summit.

Thanks for your comments, you guys have given me some places to start.

send a qjet over to John Osbourne. Search for him on the board, and you will find lots of info. He's well known and respected here.

The Q-jet is by far the best carb. ever made once you fix the factory defects, www.mrqjet.com has an un-warping tool, and a great throttle shaft bushing kit they introduced at SEMA last year which brings the carb. into the 21th century. The Edlebrock AFB lookalike isn't even a choice for anyone who is looking for performance and driveability.

Got my Q-jet back from local rebuilder yesterday. Looks great, can't wait to try it out. He does hundreds of these a year as this area in California is hot bed for old cars, classics, performance boats etc.

Thanks for all your advice, I am confident I'll be better off keeping the Q-jet and it was certainly less costly than going to something new.

Now I have to get to work and get this car running before I can't afford the gas!

    Edelbrock QJ

I stopped at the Edelbrock booth at the show today to talk about their QJ # 1904. Listed as a 795 cfm. The guy told me they stopped stocking them this year, the supplier wanted them to order more than the 20,000 a year they were doing now. Edelbrock couldn't sell that many so they are gone. He said, and I believe, they were great carbs. He also said there are still some out there but the shops were getting a pretty good price for them now. He told me $500 +. Guess I will have to stick with the one I have. He told me they don't sell any QJs any more.

About the so called Edelbrock QJ, A company in Italy bought the rights and patents to Rodchester to remake these carbs and they had only asked Edelbrock to sell them for them, the first year Edelbrock bought all that they had made, the second year they had bought about half as much as the first year claiming that no body wanted them, (I think it was from piss poor advertising), the third year the Italian Company had to contact Edelbrock to see if they were going to buy anymore carbs from them and Edelbrock said that they were not going to buy anymore carbs cause their shelves
were full and that they can't sell the ones they have. So the Italians broke all the molds and carbs that they had made. Now so many people are tring to find these carbs because they are brand new QJ's that work the same and look just like the original's, all you have to do is take off two bolts to remove the Edelbrock name plate and the model number tag plate and nobody will no the difference.
I know cause I have one and I paid $485 for it thru Pepboys and now I've been looking for another brand new one to put in moth balls for down the road.
They only made 7 types, from 750 cfm to 850 cfm and the sad part is they are more setup for Chevy cause of the fuel line goes in from the left (passenger side) of the carb.
