    Hi all,
My qjet was sitting along time and just seemed to not be right since I started restoring it a few years ago. car has had a slight miss and it has had everything changed besides carb. So I went and bought a 7040244 since it was close for my car. Bought a few books read etc bought a kit from cliff and rebuilt her. So put together car runs pretty good and my small miss is now gone. Not bad for first rebuild but car ran rich from the get go and I have the screws out about 3 1/4 turns and it seems ok to me. So my mistakes... I never checked the jet or rod sizes so im not sure if the correct sizes are in carb...my bad...anyways took car out to a local cruise...parked and 2 hours later started it up...with tons of blue smoke...Any ideas why that would happen?

    blue smoke is oil

Leaking by through the valve seals if it was only at start up.

I had one once that broke a piston skirt at start up after driving perfectly before I parked it for an hour.

yep. my motor is fresh and my value seals leak some timeS i think i may have floated the values a couple times and compromised them though.

Sounds like your telling me to pull the heads and have them gone through and might as well put a new cam and lifters in her?

if its in your budget it never hurts. you might even port the heads a bit

Good grief, it could be something as simple as just needing some new valve seals. How about some diagnosis before we start talking about ripping everything apart??? Try not to jump to conclusions.

in an old engine it never hurts to do some headwork and some upgrades. like i said. if its in your budget.

You have to be careful making a generalization like that. There actually are downsides to doing a valve job when it's not necessary, i.e. sinking the valves further into the heads and having to re-cut the stems to get height back in tolerance. If you're working on a head with induction hardened seats you lose some of that wear protection on every valve grind as well. You can't undo these things unless you have new seats and new valves installed.

assuming he knows a good old school machine shop of course. not necesarily saying he needs a full valve job. have them magged surfaced and valve guides checked and if there is a problem tackle it. also test vsprings and all new seals.

So let me get this straight. The OP asked about Q-jet jetting for his carburetor, and now we are talking about ripping the heads off it.

Let me answer the jetting question as best I can. The OP didn't mention any modifications, so for a stock 1970 GS350 with a manual transmission, the correct carburetor is 7040245. It has 73 jets and 43B primary rods. The secondary rods are BS. The 7040244 is for the automatic transmission, and is jetted leaner on the primary side. It has 69 jets and 45B primary rods. The secondary rods are the same, BS. You can get jets and rods from Greg Gessler's site. http://www.gesslerheadporting.com/

I like the KISS approach, as Devon suggested. Throw a set of valve seals in it. Also make sure the drain back holes in the heads are clear. If they aren't, excess oil will sit up top, and get dragged down the guides at high engine vacuum.

if he said he was blowing black smoke i would have went after a jettin problem. he was thinking carb problem since its the last thing messed with. i wouldn't think a jet change would have anything to do with blue smoke only at start up. just my opinion on the matter. its a tedius task changing valve seals with the heads on especially without all the right tools and without dropping locks and retainers. could check the oil return but its only at start up and it would smoke under load to if that was the case i would think. either way it can't hurt to freshen an old engine up as long as its done right.

OK I thought about this some more and Larry you are correct but for now I'm assuming the 7040244 has the stock jets etc for an auto...Couldnt find a 7040245 anywhere but my bad for not just putting what jets etc would be correct. FIrst rebuild and still learning here:) Was told Motor is stock and was just freshened up before I bought it from him and never had any real mileage accumulated since the car needed a resto. I guess im not positive of the color since i was in car and noticed through my rear view mirror and its an a/c car. Maybe I assumed some on the color. I can tell you that before putting this carb on I never really had smoke come out of her like that. So I think I need to make sure what color smoke next time it happens..Now im thinking since its never done this its the carb I rebuilt and put on.
