My home track is 1/8 mile. I have a blast racing there. when we goto divisional finals it is always at a 1/4 mile track and it is a blast as well. It is however a different experience, not better and not worse.
You guys are lucky. The closest 1/4 mile tracks to my house are Bristol, TN ( 2hr drive) or Columbus, OH ( 3-4 hr drive). Closest 1/8 mile track is Elk Creek, VA (about 1 1/2 hr. drive. Any flat piece of land around here that's over 1/8th mile long is an airport, shopping mall, or strip mine. Hopefully, someday I'll get to see waht a 1/4 mile track feels like. Either way, 1/4 or 1/8, racing is racing.
I know there has been alot of talk of Bruton Smith is plan on placing a state of the art quarter mile track some where in charlotte or concord north carolina.Anybody in the NC area or on this board know how these issues are planning out.Chris Teed
1/4 mile. :TU: All this launch talk made me think.... Broom stick? Great, someone will wipe out and the EMT's will wonder how a guy was impaled by a mop handle in a race car. :TU: Viagra? .......well that brake pedal is about 3' away so no go there.
I think 1/8 mile is more of a drivers race. Have to be good on lights, know your car well. No track left to try to catch someone or play with them.
Dwayne Martin Have you ever been to Kanawha Valley Dragway it is a 1/8 mile IHRA dragstrip located near Winfield, West Virginia reber
Having worked at a dragway ..... when I think 1/8th mile, I think of Briggs powered Junior Dragsters .........
1/8th mile sounds like telling a hot girl "Sure, I'll go to bed with, but your twin sister is not welcome to join in." ou: just not natural.......
If your local track is 1/4 mile, consider yourself lucky. Alot of racers only get to run 1/8th. On the flip side, if you make alot of passes per season, then racing 1/8th seems to help the pocketbook more. I just wish the car magazine guys would post 1/8th mile times as well as 1/4 because that data is available now at all tracks.
Bruton had his ground breaking last week at the new drag strip. It's located across US29 from the Lowes Motor Speedway. Just north east of Charlotte. Right now it's called the Dragstrip at Lowes or something like that. He says he'll be ready for the NHRA event coming up on Sept 11. Here is part of the Press Release: "Bruton does not call the track the crown jewel. He's a little more modest. He calls it the "Bellagio of drag racing." Bellagio is the luxurious Las Vegas hotel and casino known for its spectacular fountains. The drag strip is scheduled to open Sept. 11 for the Carolinas Nationals. Smith summons the project's lead architect to the front of the room Thursday to remind him that opening day is less than eight months away." Maybe the BPG should look at this track to hold a Nats event. But... probably would not be affordable.
