I have had this carb for a while (17080272). It's off a 1980 Pontiac 5.0. It has the electric choke on it which is why I want to rebuild it and use it. I'm kind of experimenting with stuff.

Would there be any major disadvantages to putting it on my 72 455? I might see the track once a year. This car is my daily driver otherwise.
    Any thoughts?

I would check the stock or tag number on that unit. I am sure someone could tell you the cfm of that particular model. If I'm not mistaken, there were two different quadra-jets made in terms of cfm. The smaller of two was used on small blocks and the larger of the two obviously on big blocks. I think there is about a 100 cfm difference between the two so I wouldn't recommend using that one on a 455, I think you will starve the engine.

    Thanks for your input.
I know they made a 750 and 800. This is most likely a 750. I'll compare it to what I see in the Doug Rowe book to be sure.

I think it's also the year before they went to the electronic carbs. I used to run it on my sbb 350 a few years back. it worked great then.

That carb will likely not be happy on a 455. It will probably never idle right. The Pontiac 301 is a very anemic motor, and the carb will need substantial modifications to feed 455 cubes.

Yes. Way too lean. It could be modded to work, but. I understand your desire for an electric choke, but there are other ways. COnversion kits are available for most carbs. What other carbs do you have?

I just have the stock 72 Buick carb and the Pont. carb. I thought about looking for a 75 Riv or Electra carb. I just missed one on eBay for $19.

My current setup is a divorced choke on a Poston intake. I'm having trouble getting the choke to work right so I thought I would go manual cable or electric carb.

    Use the earlier model carb.

Your choke set-up is easy to set-up by using the Chevy choke spring set-up.
I have this on our site for Edelbrock intakes.

You can get the choke set-up from www.ecklers.com

I went to Jegs and got that part earlier in the week. I just lose patience pretty quick.

Throw that smog carb in the trash and use nothing later than a 74 Buick 455 Carb.

I might as well toss it.
It's all in very small pieces right now anyway...

Okay now, I'm being stubborn... I still don't see the differences in this thing. It looks like an 800cfm carb. It has some really lame secondary rods and an "M" hanger. If I swap to longer BZ or CX secondary rods and a richer hanger and maybe swap the primary jets and rods, why wouldn't it work?

Because the idle passages (drilled passages inside the body of the carb that you can't see) are tiny to feed a 301 CI motor that probably couldn't get to 4000 rpm. You will end up idling on the transition curcuit, which will mean your transition curcuit is depleted when you need it, hence bad off idle stumble.

I even had idle issues with a Q-jet from a 72 350 Buick on my 71 455. It ran OK, but I could never get the idle to work right. The idle adjust screws basically had no effect.

I finally got a Q-Jet from a 73 455, which I too rebuilt, and it was a world of improvement. I can now roast the tires from a 15-20 MPH rolling start just by flooring the pedal. Couldn't do that with the 350 carb.

If you don't care about performance, it will probably suit you just fine.

No I don't want to hurt my performance.
Thanks again. I think I have this choke thing figured out anyway. It's been working pretty good.
