    1972Mach1 Just some M.M.O.G. guy.....

One of my dad's friends had a 455 in a square body Super Cheyenne with wood grain sides and Keystone Klassic wheels when I was a kid.........I'm sure he still has it because he loved it so much, and I remember how cool it was. I know it did killer burnouts.

John Codman put a 425 nailhead in his mid-80's diesel GMC..it seems to run pretty well.

Yep, sure did. Used an adapter plate to the Chevy bell housing. Tons of torque and 10.5 mpg loaded.

I put a brand new short short block in, changing the pistons to forged @ about 9.5:1 compression. I use premium gas, small price to pay I think. Cam is a blueprint Stage 1 from TA Performance, small valve heads (need to keep port velocity up in a torque motor), etc. Still use a point ignition and quadrajet. Absolutely tons of torque, and in at 2800 rpm, which is cruise RPM @ 70 mph (3.73 gears). Stock manifolds, stock intake, etc. Like I said above, 10.5 mpg loaded with a GSX, which I don't consider too bad. Oh, the bed has a cover too, so there is some wind drag. Nice little lope @ idle.

Biggest problem I always had was it wanted to get hot at idle stopped. There is a HD cooling fan, clutch, shroud etc. If I popped the hood, the heat had a way out. I just put in a new aluminum 2 core (1.25" per core tubes) Griffin radiator. I'm hoping that solves the minor cooling issue I've had since installation in 1994 and over 20,000 miles ago.

What would I do different? Use a remote oil filter system. With the stock Buick oil filter setup, you need to notch the frame rail on the passenger side to clear the filter, then reinforce that rail. If I had it to do over again, I would use a remote oil filter and leave the frame alone. Other than that, nothing. The thing is a BEAST!!

I never heard of "remote oil filter " ....is it easy to do.

I have a 70 SF engine that is complete except for AC compressor.
Might put in a 77 Chevy Truck.
    If not to much hassle.

Nope. but a Nailhead fits the early 80's Chevy pickups beautifully. The only issue is the right side exhaust manifold.

I put a 455 in my 1985 - 3/4 Ton Suburban with a Switch-Pitch transmission. I used Kenn-Bell Headers for a 70 GS. They fit perfect. I utilized motor mounts from an Electra 225. Everything bolted right in.
The only issue I ever had was, I passed a Dodge Commings pulling his car trailer as he was going up a hill, he was rolling smoke, and I passed him pulling my trailer, like he was setting still. When he got to the track in Bowling Green, he came over to see me and what I had under the hood. I had a hard time convincing him that it was a Buick motor he was looking at.

    Watching....

I have an '86 Silverado with NO rust and a mostly dead 305 chebbie with TH-350.
If I ever get the time to do it, I plan on putting a BBB in it. Thinking about using the TH-350 but I also have a rebuilt long tail TH-400 I could use.
OD would be nice too...but 86 was the last year before they went to the 700R4 in 87.
And like Marv said, I have also heard that big car frame pads bolt right in!
I wonder, if Kenne-Bell headers for a 70 GS fit in a Suburban, would a set of M/T Super Scavengers fit also? Sure would be worth a shot...

If I ever get started I'll remember to take lots of pics so I can create a build thread.

I put a stock 455 in a 74 1/2 ton GMC. I just used the same th 400 that came out of the electra. The truck was a smooth tow vehicle but eventually one of the gas tanks split open on me so I took that drivetrain and put it in a 78 3/4 4door dually. I had no issues except 8 mpg. I used the odd fire v6 oil pump which kept the oil filter away from the frame. Kinda wish I still had that truck but after I traded it in I have seen it still running around town 5 years later.

I only seen it 1 year and it was late 90s or early millennium, but a guy drove a mid 80's chebby shortbed to the GS Nationals pulling his silver T. It was black, with GS 3 spoke steering wheel and had a blower sticking out of the hood with a Buick 455 under the hood. Oh yeah, had a sticker on the upper rear part of the bed "SS455". You know, like the SS454 chebby trucks-lol :D
He drops the trailer and runs low 11s/high 10s with the truck.
The silver T was just a stocker I think it was mid 12s, but the Buick powered truck (tow vehicle) was a power house! Loved it. Never seen it before that year and not since, but I haven't been to the event since '05 ish.
Wish I would have made a picture of it.

I worked for a guy that put a 430 Buick in his Chevy car hauler, he said it was the only set up that would smoke the tires with a car on the back:D
