CARS sells two style repro caps for the RC 29 70-72, one has ribbed edges and one does not. Which is correct for 71 and 72 cars, and why?? Is it a plant thing? thanks Tim
TimR, When Glen first reproduced the part he used an NOS radiator cap as his pattern. (Originals were almost non-existant at the time.) The NOS caps have the ribbed edges, so the first batch of repro caps also had them. Later he found out that the caps installed on the original cars had smooth edges so he changed the design to look like they originally were. This is another case where an NOS "replacement" part is not the same as what was originally installed on the vehicles. So now you know it is an "original vs NOS" thing, and not a "year or plant" thing. Now as far as judging, in the past we have always accepted either style, so both should be correct. Duane
Can anyone please post a picture of an original RC29 cap, or describe it. Does it have red and blue print on it?
What About the RC 15? A high-level restoration friend of mine says the correct cap should be a RC 15 and have the 2 tabs or ears sticking out of it. The RC 29 looks like it should be for a later than 70-72 car. Tamaraz (630) 904-4500 is supposed to sell them. What do you think Duane? BuddyBrad
Duane is a late sleeper, so I'll step in. The correct cap for our cars is the RC-29 without scallops around the outside. We do not take off points for the RC-29 WITH scallops. A RC-15 is not correct for our application but it was for many GM vehicles. OK Duane, time to wake up....
Not that anyone would argue with Brad or Duane, but I just looked at two original 1970 magazine road tests, and the radiator caps are unquestionably RC-29s, no scallops
Yes Duane, glad you're finally up and its not even noon - What would be the proper cap for my Buick to wear in an all Yugo show? Should I go with the RC-29 or is a rag sticking out of the neck sufficient?
Rag out of the neck is the proper "cap" in that situation... Hey, you know why Yugo installed a heated rear window, don't you??? keep going... a little more... It's used as a hand warmer when you have to push the car!!!! Geez, I crack myself up sometimes...
As 1 Brad to another Brad - I like it! :Brow: Now I wonder why the Taurus had a heated windshield for a few years?
