Radial Tires - I Must've had a Momentary Lapse of Reason...

    ...that lasted over 6 years!

I cannot believe I've been driving this long (about 17k miles) on Goodyear Polyglas tires. I admit, the G60-15 is one cool looking tire :bglasses:, and being OEM equipment, I was unwilling to change them. At Yardley's BPG meet this past May, the Gawels noticed that one of my front tires was wearing unevenly. At that point, I knew I needed an alignment and I also decided to get new radial tires. I settled on some 245-60-15 BFG radial T/A tires. After the tire installation, the shop told me I needed upper control arm bushings and lower ball joints before they could align the car. Here is the original thread on that!

So...I collected some parts from www.espo.com and had Rob Chilenski at Stage1Automotive in Pompton Plains NJ do the work (instead of the original tire/alignment shop). Since the front suspension was apart, I asked Rob to rebuilt it entirely so I didn't have to mess with anything in that area for a long, long time.

I got the car back today (dropped it off three nights ago) - Holy Cow! :eek2: What a difference in the handling! I am very surprised at the way the GS handled a particular off-ramp at an 'above recommended' speed. Radial tires are the way to go for a driver car. Polyglas looks cool, but let me tell you - I have a very different car with the radials. It's quieter at cruise, doesn't squeak when turning a corner, handles better, and I'm sure I'll appreciate the additional traction the next time I'm caught in the rain

I'd like to thank Rob Chilenski at Stage1Automotive for an excellent job as usual, Jim Lore for the www.espo.com link for inexpensive suspension parts, Jim Haas for the radial tire alignment specs, the Gawels for noticing the tire wear before something bad happened, and everyone who's advice led me to the 'rubber' bushing decision (in lieu of polygraphite).

If you drive your Buick anywhere and everywhere (like I do), and you're on Polyglas tires, my opinion is get yourself a nice set of radial tires.
