My shroud is in good condition with no cracks or missing pieces as far as I can see. But it was painted many years ago and the paint is flaking off and it really needs some attention to be freshened up to look like new.

What is the best way to strip and clean the shroud? Can it be media blasted (plastic media, soda blasted, ??) to make it look fresh and new? Once cleaned what is the BEST finish to make it look correct and new, special paint or what?

Anyone have pictures of one that has been restored to look like new?

    Thanks!

Rob, I would not blast it with anything. Try lots of rags and laquer thinner. It will take some rubbing but it shold work. try hidden area inside first. I have had good succes with Acrylic satin clear after they are cleaned. I think I used Krylon. Can try and take picture later.

    Rob,

After you clean it with lacquer thinner, you may want to hand polish it with orange rubbing compound and then plastic polish.

It will eventually dull out and look very similar to when it was new. I did this to mine and got excellent results. Mine even had a cigarette burn on it I sanded out starting with 220 and working my way up to 1000 grit.

Good luck on restoring your shroud.

    Thanks,

    Ken

Anyone have some before-and-after pics of a fan shroud that has been restored? I'd really like to see what a nice one is suppose to look like as far as color and sheen.

Thanks for the replys so far...

I have an unrestored shroud and my other which I restored about 5 years ago. I can try and get pictures and see what shows.

After removing the paint.......use SEM dye and it will look like new....do NOT use paint.

George is right on with the SEM dye;I would like to add to use a dark charcoal color rather than black to get the most original look.

I was thinking that SEM dye would be a good route. Will it hold up well to the under-hood heat? Which dark charcoal SEM paint code number would give me the BEST original look?

My car is not concourse but I want it as nice and correct/original I can make!

You know I read a thread the other day and I can't remember who it was, but they were saying he had 20 plus years exp as a paint supplier and he was offering his advice to any and all questions.

Short term memory burnt. :puzzled: Sorry. I will go and see if I can find it.:TU:

    Rob,
I did my 70 GS 18 years ago w/SEM dye and it still looks great.

Visit any Sherwin Williams auto body supplier and they will carry SEM products.

Visit www.sem.ws for the colors and you can request a color sample brochure.

    I use 15243 Satin Black

I used an SEM product just like this for my rear seat. It worked great.

Everyone calls it dye though, but it's not dye. It's paint, but it's a speacial flexible paint with polymers and stuff in it to be able to flex without cracking like regular paint. It's not a true dye and I don't even think it says dye anywhere on the can.

I'm glad this thread came up because I was going to use the Krylon Semi Flat black that's so popular for underhood stuff.

Should the radiator cover be painted with the same SEM stuff as the shroud?

I prefer Krylon Satin finish paint myself. Looks closer to underhood black IMO

These are Aerosol correct ? Do they spray out thin ? Wondering if they would fill in the graining on the armrest bases ?

    Thanks

I just checked my SEM catalog....you are correct....product is labeled as a Color Coat and states "This is not a dye".....for conversation purposes...we will call it a dye.

As for the rad cover...as long as you have the plastic cover...you can use the same dye.

As for spraying....it works great....just apply 2-3 light coats and you will not fill in the grain. They are spray cans.

I have my doubts on a black paint. Check out the picture of an untouched shroud just out of a car and my touched up with clear. They look pretty much the same. Guess which is which?

Nope, left is untouched just out of 70,000 mile Electra. Right is cleared. I think the Satin clean gives about the right look.
