I'm looking to replace the old stock Sonomatic in my 66 Skylark, apart from a bit of static when turned on, it doesn't work anyway. My wife gave me a decent Jensen CD player for Christmas, but needless to say I'd either have to botch up the dash to make it fit, or put it in the glove box - I don't want to do either, the Jensen can go in my truck. I want something fairly domestic, no need for mega power or ultra fine sound quality (as an old guy, I couldn't hear the difference anyway), I just want some tunes - a Best Buy (Future Shop up here) or Walmart (Canadian Tire?) tape deck, or something later GM readily found at my local wreckers, that'll fit in my dash without cutting, and some speakers, is just fine. Any suggestions? :Do No:

there are companies that can retrofit am/fm & cd players into your old am radio .

Classic Buicks has nice product, ...

... or at least access to it, "custom" made too, i.e.:

I'm already considering going that route, but if someone here has info. or experience with something out there at hand, easier to obtain that fit, at a fair price, to compare with, I'd consider that too. I just want options that won't involve cutting my dash  certainly there must be something out there, a min. $149 US for a cassette deck seems a bit pricey, good looking, but pricey. I don't have to have all the bells and whistles, my Skylark still only has the dash speaker!

u can buy a dual speaker unit that replaces the single front speaker. a company in michigan sells them. since your new unit would probably require 4 or 8 ohm speakers, usually 4 ohm nowadays (your old one is 10 ohms), u will need to replace the old one anyhow, or hide a pair of small new speakers under the dash.
