Rims are really dull and trying to figure out if they can be polished to be nice and shiny again or i will need to get them chromed? I tried some #00 steel wool which help get rid of some rust and dirt but not much else. Once i get 10 post i will post up a pic of the rim.
Remember that the painted areas inside the 1966 wheel are grey, not black. Also notice the GS emblems that are missing in your avatar photo.
Boy the more i dig into this car the more i see it was pieced together. Looks like i have parts from a wildcat, that would explain why my center hubcaps has a wildcat instead of the Riviera "R" symbol. The only thing on this car that says GS is the dash. Can anyone tell me a concrete way to tell this is a GS?
Do you have the build sheet of the car ? Check under the seats between the springs, on top of the petrol tank, and take out the lower part of the rear seat to check if the build sheet is between the springs. Without that it will be tough to identify the car as a true GS. But as Frank (board member "austingta", it's his Riviera in the wheel-photo above) already pointed out to you: That GS emblem on the dash is a very good indication that it's a true GS car. My mate Rob ("75Riv" on this board, we actually drove Frank's 1966 Riviera GS across the USA last November/December) had the right centre caps for your car for sale, I will ask him if he still has them :TU:
Wheels - If you used steel wool there as good as they're gonna get. What makes a 66 GS? Aluminum valve covers Big chrome air cleaner 3.42 limited slip axle. Look for PY stamp and a circle with X inside on bottom of axle tube about 3-4" over from diff housing. Its common for this to be eroded away on rust belt cars. Note The 3.42 posi could be ordered on a non-GS Riv but it wasn't very common. GS emblems on fenders or perhaps evidence they once existed. Of course on the glove box as well. The springs and shocks were HD but no way to tell the difference from physical appearance on springs. Probably the best indicator is a BS code transmission vs the standard BT. The riveted tag is on the right side towards the middle of tranny. The BS or BT will be in big letters that can be wiped off if you use strong cleaner so be careful. the Code is also stamped in very small characters at the bottom of tag. Note all these things can be swapped onto a car. If it has a BS tranny and the date code is in sinc with the build date, then you probably have a bonafide GS. Build sheets rarely made it into these Rivs.
. . . not really Frank/Erik - the glove box "GS" badging could be had by simply swapping glove box doors, or the glove box door trim, and I have yet to see a build sheet for a 2nd generation Riviera ! o No:
i recieved some original paperwork when i bought the Riv including orginal owners manuals which has the metal plate in the book. I also received what could be a build sheet paper about 4x6 inch maybe slightly bigger and it has a bunch of codes on it. I will take a pic and post it up.
Well i did get the production sheet, hope someone can decode this: frame=94 axle =PY Springs front=UT Rear=TY Shocks front LM Rear=LN STRG=9 Engine= SC (any idea what this code meant??) Pulley Belt=1 Trans= BS Shift Link=9 SPDO Pin=2 EXH=G Engine Harness=HD air clnr=3 (assume chrome air cleaner??)
I do have a very nice set of 66=70 Riviera caps, but due to shipping prices I think it is better to contact board member Mitch (username: mitchr); he sells really beautiful repro caps
Thats awesome - See the PY for rear axle? you have the 3.42 which confirms your question in the other forum on ratio. the BS is for the GS tranny. Standard was BT. If I get a chance I'll try to decode some of the others. If you would be so kind I would love to get a copy or clear digital pic of your sheet with the codes. These are pretty rare to find. Thanks
All I have found similar to a build sheet in my Riviera is from Fisher Body. Has notes from an inspector written on it. I found it when I pulled the dash out of my car.
The build sheet was handed to me in a clear plastic holder when i bought the car. I recieved the title, build sheet, owners manual, and protection plan book (protect-o-plate book). sadly enough the 3 year warranty is up LOL.
