Ratchet shifters, shift lights??

Does someone have a "NICE" install of a ratchet shifter in their GS? Every one I've seen looks kinda ratty. I hate to remove the console from the '70 but my shifting prowess leaves something to be desired. I'd like to make it work with the console and would give it a shot if I had a second console to cut up.. right. And I know about the B&M kit for the TH400, used one. This is a 200-4R.

Preferences on ratchet shifters please? And some show as compatible with 4-spd auto, others not?? I'm also told they're generally a PITA to work in a street car. ???

Also, anyone using a stand-alone shift light? I'd like to be able to hide one and use it on race day. I don't have a digital ignition so would probably need the module, too. Alternates?

    Thanks.

    Gary,

Can you custom tailor the modulator on the 200 like you can the TH350/400? That's how I do it - let the trans do the work.

That being said, I'm going to have to knock mine down a couple hundred rpm before I go racing (and more once I get some gears in it).

    shifters

    Gary

I have a B&M pro rachet shifter in my car and in Renee's car. Love this shifter, works great. I would highly recommend this kind. You just have to make sure that they are adjusted the right way. I dont know if or how it would work with a cut up console, both of ours are just in the cars alone.

If i can get a chance, i can go out and take a picture of one of them and send it to you.

    Steve,

I have a request in with Steve at Art Carr (CPT) to get the governor closer to the 5700 I'd like. It shifted 4800 in Vegas. Problem they have is a weak 6-banger test mule engine. I wouldn't mind playing with it myself if I can get the how-to details and after the warranty expires.

    Denny,

A pic would be great. I like the T-handle shifters and the black 'console' look. The Pro Ratchet doesn't list 200-4R.

Here are those that are listed as compatible with 200-4R or "most 4-spd auto":

    B&M Megashifter
    B&M Hammer (most 4spd)
    B&M Street Bandit (Yuk)

Is there a lot of difference in the mechanicals between the B&M styles and the Hurst and B&M brands?

None of the Hurst shifters say anything about 4spd, in the Summit catalog anyway. I'd swap to one of the handles with the Line-Lock button regardless of which shifter I end up with.

    Gary,
Fix the governor. Tell "what's-his-name" at Art Carr that Bruce at Performance Trans got your Buddy's shift point to within 100 RPM of what he asked for first try . I'll ask Bruce to call if he needs help learning how to do it :Smarty:  .

I read of somebody wiring an RPM switch to the oil light in the dash to come on for the shift light.

    Adam,

Yeah, I'd have figured with some experience they should have gotten it lots closer than 1000rpm. Have to see how it goes this time around.

Good idea on the shift light. I'll check Summit for the sensors.

    Thanks.

I'll be in Reno this weekend for UNR graduation (my step-son). Will hit Summit, Harbor Freight and possibly the Sparks P&P.

    Gary,

Have you thought about removing the console and taking out the chrome metal section and either fabing up a custom plate or just leave the plate out and reinstall the console. This way you don't have to destroy a somewhat rare console.

Ratchet shifter for 72 Skylark with bench seats

I'm swapping in a 455 and 700r4 into my 72 Skylark convertible (with bench seats). I'm going with a B&M floor shifter - either the Pro Ratchet or the Hammer. What's the chance that the pro ratchet could accidentally switch gear if it's tapped while driving.? Is it hard to get it into reverse and park?

I'ld prefer a ratchet-style pistol grip shifter, but haven't found one that seems easy to use for a regularly driven street car. Any comments?

    Thanks!
