I guess I should have made a note, or taken a picture of this assy before tearing it all apart 2 months ago.

67 skylark, rear drum brakes and bolt in axles.

where does the axle end gasket go?

    Differential housing flange
    gasket
    drum backing plate
    outer retaining plate

    Or

    Differential housing flange
    drum backing plate
    gasket
    outer retaining plate.

I think it is the first one, sealing the drum backing plate to the differential housing, but.....??????

The first one looks right, but I have to tell you that I did not use a gasket when I assembled my 8.5. I'm sure there is a gasket there, but I did not use one and it doesn't leak. When I swapped my 8.2 for the 8.5, I had the builder leave the axles uninstalled in the 8.5. I then unbolted the 8.2 axles, pulled them, wired up the backing plates, and dropped the 8.2 housing down. Hooked up the 8.5 housing to the control arms, put the backing plates on, installed the axles, and completed the axle swap without messing with the hydraulics, or E-brake cables. It doesn't leak a drop.
