Joe, can we get a shot of the top of your cylinder head where the exhaust manifold bolts on (drivers side front) ???

After reading all this stuff I went out and checked my heads. I have 71 heads on the car, two spare engines, a 72 and a 74. Also have two other pairs of heads, a set of 69 heads and a set of 73 Stage 1 heads and none of them have the aforementioned pad cast on them. That being said I had a pair of 67 replacement heads with two different casting numbers. One looked just like a stock head and the other didn't look the same at all, but can't remember if they had that pad or not. Traded them to Carl Creque in Chicago, maybe he still has them.

All this talk about pads...pad or no pad, is all speculation.

Buick used lots of different castings and it wasn't unusual to change one mid year.

A magnet is the only way to verify casting materials.

Sorry if I continued to divert the original direction of this thread.
    Very Nice GSX, BTW!

those are cast iron heads. note the ac mounting boss on passenger side. too thin for aluminum. don't get too excited yet guys.

Heads are all metal. This car weighed 4210 lbs at last years event. I'm about 230 lbs, that puts my car right around 2 tons. You know, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power door locks, tilt wheel, rear window defrost, etc.....Now that's a heavy car. No a/c in the car this year ( converted back to it's original non a/c state ), so we'll have to check out this years weight. It's not a F.A.S.T. car, but is a 2004 Detroit Autorama 1st place, '70-'72 restored class, winner. This car shows and goes. So bring your magnets with ya, come on over, and let me know if you find any Aluminum anywhere on this car. Joe X.

Thnx John, and other Buick Enthusiast for your support :beer . Notice the a/c box on that firewall? These actually were last years photos. A similar process happened this year also, when the a/c came out. See ya Friday Donny. Joe X.

Opps, I forgot about the stock/factory Buick Aluminum front timing chain/waterpump/oilpump cover, factory Aluminum alternator bracket ( non a/c cars only), factory Aluminum Q-Jet carb base, and factory Aluminum distributor housing. I think that's about it . Joe X.
