+1 .......... "dealer installed" does not make it a GSX.

Nice enough car, but lots of little stuff wrong...door panels, disc brake pedal pad, wrong battery, wrong distributor, wrong compressor decal, no emissions decal, painted gas tank, etc.
Also should have a vinyl top. Anyone know what code "U" is for the top? Doesn't show up on the sources I can reach from work.........

Didn't someone post a sale ad, for a different Buick, from this same seller awhile back? It will be interesting to see what it actually sells for.

I just noticed that at the bottom of the guys really long description, he's posted a link to a portion of the real GSX numbers that Mark M. researched.
I wonder how Mark feels about him using it to sell a car thats not a real GSX? :puzzled:
Would also like to know what "Illinois rebuilt title" means....

I just asked the question of the seller if real or not (it's not, built in Fremont, CA). We'll see if they answer me. Doubt it but you never know.

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

U code was a mid-year change and it's for a dark brown vinyl top.

I asked them a question about the GSX claim, here's the response:

The car you are questioning is a X packaged car installed at the time of delivery at a dealership in Texas. We are not claiming it was a factory X package car. If you read our entire write up you will see that. ( This car is a true GS455 car and according to the previous owner the car is believed to have had a dealer installed GSX package). If you would like to get in touch with the previous owner to verify this I believe I could get you his number to call. Sorry for any confusion.

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

The U in the VIN identifies what engine came with the car, in this case a 455.

Yes, but the "U" we were referring to is in the paint code on the body plate.

Many things incorrect, this was a 14" wheel car with white stripe tires, regular "deluxe" (not 3 spoke rallye) steering wheel, notchback bench, vinyl top, just to name a few. The list goes on and on...

That's quite an unusual story and probably a tall tale.

Hence the salvage title from Illinois

The seller did respond to me and this is his response:

The x package was added at the dealership in Texas before delivery. It a real numbers matching 455 GS with the x package added as stated above. If you have questions please call Gary at 847-774-9855.

So I think we can all conclude, this is not a real GSX as several have posted above.

So the one for sale is the flood car? Still raises a lot of ???. If this was a "dealer installed" GSX package, why would they start with a vinyl top car? And, if they did, why? It would have been so much easier to start with a non-vinyl top car. I'm calling B.S. on the whole story. Someone is out to make a huge profit on an unlucky (gullible) buyer. I'll be he's getting 'swamped' with questions.

There were tons of 71-72 GSX's with vinyl tops, your question has no merit.

As to why the car does not have one now, I imagine it was removed at some time due to an owners preference.

You can say what ever you want, but I know of 2 Dealer installed GSX's, and both have paperwork. If you don't have paperwork then there is no proof...............end of story.

PS. Every early Chevy 350 motor I have ever seen for sale was an old Vette motor.................................................................

Hmmmm. A little research shows this car was involved in a Comprehensive claim for flooding on about 03/31/2014. I believe Hagerty Insurance was involved.

The really interesting question is if this same car was represented to the Insurance Co. to be a real '72 GSX (1 of 44-ish)? I would think there would be more than a few dollars value difference between a real '72 GSX and a '72 GS 455.

I would bet that contacting 2 or 3 Owners ago would probably nail down some facts as to whether there were any GSX items present on the car back then .... and identify which prior Owner added the GSX equipment.

Sorry Mister Know it All. Never said there weren't. Just wondered if/why it was removed at the 'transition'.

Believe me I don't know everything and didn't understand where you were coming from with the question.

As far as removing the vinyl top, a lot of guys don't like them, so a non-vinyl top car appeals to more buyers.

I enjoy it when I get on here and learn things from so many of you, this place is really a great resource. I love the color of this car, was at Mecum in kc last week and they sold a nice skylark for $14k.. The price on this car doesn't seem out of line for a really nice gs455...
