I went to start the car yesterday morning and noticed i wasnt getting any spark,so i started to trouble shoot it slowly,i changed the original coil in there and bought a new one, switched that out still no spark, mind you i`m getting power to the + on the coil wire, next i figured it may be the points,i switched out the points in there with a new set i have, still no spark, make a long story short and after switching out several sets or new points i had and was not getting any spark i had an old set of used Delco points so i put those in and she fired right up but i think theres still an issue somewhere, theres no way i changed so many point sets and a new coil and wasnt getting any spark, what else could i look that might`ve caused this? Thanks
Spark Hi, Make sure that your condenser is tight. This can cause some strange problems. Hope this helps. JOE
George, You need to check the gap on points when you install them. Tap the starter over until the points rubbing block is on a high point of the distributor cam. Then look at your point gap. Should be about the width of a matchbook cover. I've seen brand new points sets that needed alot of adjustment because the point gap was too big.
yes . if the points are gapped too close , no spark . the proper gap , manually , is about 18 or 19 .
Your trouble sounds like a point gap (dwell) problem to me, but if not the most likely cause of "wierd" electrical problems is a bad ground. Don't forget to check the braided straps going from your engine block to the body............it wouldn't hurt to take them apart and clean them. :bglasses:
i have a dwell meter, usually even if the points are off and need to be gapped shoul`nt you atleast be getting some kinda reading on the dwell meter when cranking even if no spark?i wasnt getting any reading on the dwell meter. Thanks
No reading is from the points being closed all the time..........(or no juice).........as long as the gap is reasonably close it should at least run. :bglasses:
i`m thinking it wasnt getting juice somehow,i tried 4 sets of point and non had spark?then i threw in a set of some old used ones and fired up?it doesnt make sense. THanks
George, Check the wire that connects to the points. I had a car one time that was acting funny. I could not figure it out. Than one day I broke down and I moved the wire and than the car started. The wire was coming apart at the connection. I would check all the wires to the cap and coil. Good Luck. Jerseysky66 Bob
George, The last few sets of points that I have installed, have all had point gaps of about .040 or more. You won't get a spark like that. It's such an easy thing to check. Also be careful when you attach the 2 wires to the new points set. If either of those contact the base plate, no spark is the result.
thanks guys will check them out,its running now but i`ll try one of the points i have and see what the outcome will be. Thanks
