i remember asking for some help finding an 8.5 rear end for my regal and i somebody told me about switching the one i had to a posi and using s-10 axles. that and i found an s-10 with 4:11 ratio rear end and i was wodering if i could do something with them.
Rearaxle S-10 FYI the S-10 axles are of a different length than Regal. If you have a bbb the you should use a 8.5 rear, if you have a sbb you could use a 7.5 up graded to 7.5/8 w/ 28 spline axles, modified GN. If you plan to race use the 8.5. Diver
okay how about this,im looking for a posi to put into my 7.5 on the car already. its probably been on the car from the factory, and my regal had a 231 v6 to begin with, what spline count should i look for?
Rear The first Q's, is what engine are you using or going to use? The standard rear for Regals with 231 engine is 26 spline axles. The 4.10 ratio is way to small of pinion gear for the 231 engine and could shear the gears off with a larger engine. Reread my thread. I am using a set of 3.42 gears with an Alburn posi center 7 5/8 ring. I also have a 355 sbb via a 350 turbo feeding the rear. I do not race the car, just few quick time trials. It is mostly a looker car as it is a 82 Sport Coupe with T-tops, just a show and go. Diver
i have a 305 small block in it now,i plan to have a 350 buick after that. and honestley ive also been looking into a 3.42 posi for about a couple of weeks,i just looking to have have all the detals first so i can get the correct parts for an easy install.
rear I read your thread and you hooked the 305 up to the dual pattern 350 transmission, correct? With the way gas prices are these I would think about a 3.36 rear and normal size tires, I use a 3.42 with 225-70-14 tires on rear which are about the same dia. as 235-60-15's which equals about 3.36. I am using stock 82 Sport Coupe 14" rims. I still peel rubber in a 1 to 2 shift. You do not want the tires to not spin as the rear may break when pressed hard, you choice. To put the GN 28 spline axles in the rear, they need to be machined on the end to fit the center section. Hope this will help. Diver
ten bolts will work just fine. I run a bbb with around 650 HP and it has seen slicks on it since day one.
You can get an a-body 12 bolt under there with the right control arms, but have to run big backspacing on the rear to offset the wider width of the housing. It's around a 5.5 - 6" backspace wheel that's required, similar to a '93 up f-body or C5 Corvette. It's not really necessary as the GN rears hold as much abuse as a 12 bolt if built correctly.
