what rear ends are compatable with a 72 skylark custom rear end its 10 bolt, don't know the size or how they measure it, but need a posi rear end, or just the posi differential. Also im no mechanic by any means and i see people say its not for a novice to change a differential and was wondering why that is does it have to be put in a certain way or just line the teeth up? Looks simple enough if you just have to line it up, but i doubt its that simple, am i right.

Not simple. Take my word for it. Takes a specialists to do it right. If its the original 10 bolt, it is the more common 8.5 rear. Trans Ams/ Camaros from the early 70's through 81 will interchange. Many more cars came with that same size rear. Do a search in the gears section and read all the great info. on them. A member named OPH (I think that's correct) is very knowledegable about rears. Maybe he will chime in. Post in the gears section too. Might want to delete the other posts, if they are the same. Looks like the triple threat question.

The innards of the Camaro/TA will fit in your 10 bolt, that is correct. The axle itself is a little different in that you have coil springs the F-body has leaf springs, so don't plan on a bolt in housing from those cars.

Depends on what you are planning as well. You could get a new posi carrier and gears installed for about $1000-1500. Used ones that age get loose, they may not be much better than what you have. This is the perfect time for a ratio change as well, my 3.42's seem to be a great all-around choice.

For about double that, well ~$2200, you can get an assembled, bullit-proof 12 bolt from Moser with posi, with your gears, ready to bolt in, c-clips gone. Spendy but permanent, something to consider.
