Well, I wasn't paying attention, had a rope seal but no neoprene seal and now I need a new rear main cap. Not looking for a whole block just to get a main cap, just the rear main cap. Who's willing to let one go? I was that close to dropping this into my 79 Squarebody. RATS!
You can't just install a cap. Need to get it line bored with a replacement cap. What happened to the original one? Show pics, maybe it can be repaired.
X2, changing caps is a big problem.....you can just drop it on yes....but there is about 99.99% chance thst the hole won't be round there
This is a major problem. Depending on the level of machine work done to this block you may be better off sourcing a different block or buying billet caps and machining those to fit. Finding another stock rear cap that will be close enough to line bore will be tough as it is. What damage did you do to the rear cap?
I have billet caps on mine....but they only made the center 3, they were planning on the rear one but as far as I know it might not be made
Okay, more to the story. I bought a Le Sabre 455 specifically for the engine and trans. The body was crap. Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to look at the bearings, replace the timing set and re-gasket the whole thing. I did all of the gaskets except the oil pan and was putting new bearings in the rods and mains. The damage happened on that bearing cap as I was running the second of three passes for torquing the caps. The cap is NOT salvageable because it is actually broken into two different pieces. I know that I have to now tear the damn thing down to the bare block, get a new rear main, have the stupid thing line honed or maybe line bored depending on the condition of the parts. I'll probably need to have the crank straightened and new cam bearings installed too. So, my cheap, quick and dirty engine swap has grown into way more than I wanted to do with this thing. Now, since it's going down to the bare block, I may as well do a cam, hone it and do a set of rings too. No way I'm going all the way with boring, new pistons, resizing rods, etc. I just need the new cap so I can get the block to my machinist along with the crank. Anyone have a cap?
I should have a cap....I won't be home till sat to check.......I also have several bare blocks I am going to be putting up for sale if you would rather just swap block and put those guts in
Seen this on Chicago Craig's list... https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/pts/d/des-plaines-buick-455-block/7224459262.html
I'll give Brent tomorrow to get back to me. If I don't hear from him, I'll definitely take you up on your offer with many thanks.
