Hey guys and gals....this has probably been answered before.....but....what is the widest tires you all have on the rear of your 66 Skylarks? The ones that are on it are 255/60/15. Not wide enough for my liking. I thought about going to 50 series, so what do you guys think will fit without rubbing? Come on, the wider, the better! :kodak:

I am not sure exactly how wide you can go. But just changing to a 50 series tire will only make the sidewall shorter. You probably already know that, but just wanted to confirm, First number is width and second is sidewall.

275/60-15's will fit if the backspacing is perfect and you roll or trim the inner lip on the wheelwell. I haven't tried anything wider.

Right, first number is the section width (sidewall to sidewall) in millimeters. Second number is aspect ratio, the sidewall height as a percentage of the section width. So the difference between a P275/50R-15 and a P275/60R-15 is the the 50 series tire has a shorter sidewall than the 60's series tire. They both have a section width of 275 millimeters.

Thank you all for the replies......I do know about all the numbers, but I was just wondering what you guys actually used on yours that don't rub. I don't want to roll the lip, so I guess I can't go too much wider......and that is a beautiful 65!! That is the original color of my car. The color I'm getting it painted is Everglade Green Metallic.....I hope I like it!

You MUST use the right back spacing to center the wheel in the well. That is the only way to run the maximum width rubber. BobbyBuick said he used 5" of back spacing on an 8"? wide wheel to fit the P275/60R-15.

I had 245/60-15 on mine and they rubbed. 8" Weld Wheels. Spacing must have been wrong.

I run 235/60-15 on mine. Looks better!
I had the 255's up front for a few miles when the inspection station rotated my tires without asking me. They rubbed a little.

With the outer lip rolled and some work on the inner wheel well I am running 285ZR17's on my 65 Skylark. I think I have enough room to go 295ZR17. We also jacked the outer well out some. I am running a 1971 ten bolt and had to go with 6 3/8" back spacing because the 71 axle is wider. Again this is on a 65 Skylark.
