Received my rear wing for my 1971 Skylark trunk lid. Need to have a body shop finish it off, paint to match and install. Any ideas at what kind of price I will be looking at? :idea2:
I don't have access to my receipts right now, but I think mine was about $150 to prep and paint. I installed it myself.
Did you get the reinforcements for under the deck lid? And did you fit the wing to the deck lid before you sent it to get painted? It's always a good idea to do this stuff before paint is applied so there are no surprises when it comes to installing it. This holds true for all body parts.
Body shop is going to prep, sand, then finish the wings pedestals off to match trunk surface before paint. They then will color match, paint and install it with the included gaskets and hardware. Basically their gonna do everything soup to nuts to make it look as a factory installed option. Without seeing my car which is mint and the wing which is I purchased new but unfinished they gave me an estimate of $350. Wasn't sure if the price was on the high side but they do quality work which I've seen.
That seems very reasonable to me. I spent several hours installing as I had to figure out the proper location on the trunk lid, drill the bolt holes. figure out how to get the reinforcement brackets inside the trunk lid, fiddle with the hardware where you can't get your fingers into, etc.
$350 seems very reasonable to me too especially since they are preping, supplying (paint, primer etc) and installing Before you posted that, I was going to respond with between $300 and $400
What I bought didn't come with reinforcement brackets. Just gaskets, double end screws and washers. Anyone have pictures of the brackets referred to??
Year One has them. Probably other places too. try this link for a picture: http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/fbshopmain2.asp?input=mse1p&SM=1&SC=&goBtn.x=10&goBtn.y=4
I assume the brackets are meant to help keep the spoiler stable. I don't have them on mine and I've had it on 15 years.
Just got a copy of the wing install instructions from the "Parts Place". No mention of brackets. Just aligning templates and mounting gaskets and screws.
i suggest that u test fit that spoiler to the trunk where it is being mounted on the trunk lid, before any prep work. it may require some work for a proper fit.
I've read in other posts that without the brackets, if someone leans on the spoiler it can dent the trunk lid where it attaches. Of course nobody should be leaning on your car to start with. I would think if you use large fender type washers inside the trunklid to disperse the load better, you should be OK.
I've installed 3 of the repro spoilers, don't use the brackets, but do use washers, and haven't noticed trunk distortion. The repro spoiler is lighter than an original spoiler, also, so less weight means less concern, as the spoiler is attached to the trunklid.:bglasses:
Thanks, The nuts the wing came with had integrated washers that were grooved so they would hold better. Had the wing installed without the gaskets porvided, just used silicone sealant to avoid leaks. So far so good!
