I have a leak in the 8.5 rearend of my 73 GS. I'd like to replace the seal before I attempt to take it to Cecil Co in October. How much trouble will I get into if I remove the rear yoke and replace the seal then tighten the yoke back up? Its not excessive, but bothers me a bit.

Pat look in your service manual. I believe the procedure is to first mark the position of the pinion nut to pinion gear, R & R the seal, then tighten the pinion nut an additional 1/8 turn (or less?) past the marks.
The whole idea is to not change the pinion preload too much.
