1969 GS bucket seats have the seatback release in the middle of the seat back. I want a reclining passenger seat ( okay, the wife does.)

Earlier GS seats have the release button on the side, I believe.

Can I adapt the reclining bucket seat mechanism from an earlier year GS, or from other A-bodies, to work on my buckets and still look 100% correct?

Assume that the seats will be in the process of being re-covered so having to get in to the interior of the seat won't be an issue.

    Steve,
The seat frames are different, so the answer would be no. You would need a seat from a 69-72 to be correct.

Also the cushions are different, so you would either need to recycle your "69" Skylark/GS cushions, or alter the cushions to work with the 69 Buick upholstery.

PS. I don't think the original recliner seats folded flat like newer seats do, so that is another thing to consider.

    Duane --

Just to clarify -- it would not be possible to rip apart a 67 or 68 seat and fit the actual recliner mechanism to my stock 69 buckets when I re-do them?

No way would I use different cushions form earlier seats -- I am dedicated to the stock look. Correct cushions, correct covers, or I won't bother.

    Steve,
The 67 and 68 seat frames are different then the 69-72 frames. The differences go way beyond having headrests and center mounted buttons, I am sure the locking latch assemblies are also different.

Now I imagine if you really tried you could cut/piece anything together and make it work, I proved that with my X-Camino. But I am not sure if it would be "safe" to do that, and we are talking about the safety of your passenger.

Safety concerns? Hey, it aint like my kids will be sitting there -- just my wife!

Thanks for the input. been wondering about this issue for a while.

    Steve,
No problem. You may need to take both seats apart and really look at the differences before deciding to do it.

Might watch e-Bay for '69- early '70 GTO reclining passenger seats or reclining mechanisms removed from same. They are tough find, but out there.

I had a set of reclining buckets from a 69 Pontiac gran prix very simialir to 69-72 Buick buckets. I sold them to a friend maybe he still has them. Do you want me to ask him? They were black.
