Just wondering what vendor you guys' would recommend for purchasing a complete disc brake conversion for GM A bodys.Price as well as customer service are obviously important as I have heard some horror stories about certain vendors.Appreciate any feedback.

Now that I think about it, Scarbird may only have front kits.

Guys please be careful as some of the aftermarket spindles are chineese made and I have heard horror stories of them breaking . Scarebird uses the drum brake spindles and have a bolt on bracket to add the disc hardware .

I would trust the Summit kit long before some of the cheap kits on E-bay

I have been hoping for a new thread like this. I was looking at performanceonline.com actually for a centerlink, but noticed thay have a brake upgrade too. I ordered a catalog from them a few weeks back, but it hasn't come yet.

I am close to ordering from Matt's Classic Bowties (ebay). I am looking at the front and rear complete kit. It comes pre-assembled and includes much more than other kits I've seen. I have not confirmed if his kit contains American or Chinese made spindles.

I saw a thread on a Chevy site (linked to from v8Buick) about the a balljoint failure due to Chinese spindles. The take home message was to make sure that the balljoint seats into the spindle properly and if not - have it reamed to the correct dimensions.

I'll keep watching this thread for more insight.

    Best Wishes,

Joe I read that thread about the ball joint fitment also . But I have also read about TWO other spindle failures where the actual spindle broke off where the inner wheel bearing goes . So please be careful , I don't want to see anyone get hurt or tear up their car . I don't mean to sound like doom and gloom just trying to look out for for your best interest and health .

Thanks Mike. I didn't mean to discount your concern. I hadn't heard about the inner wheel bearing breakages.

I am building my car to take my two kids to the beach in on weekends, so I share your concern. And I agree we should all make wise choices when selecting key parts.

    Joe ,
Thanks for not being offended for the stuff I posted . Now I have more reason for wanting you not to get junk suspension , the two kids you mentioned . I looked into those cheap kits and wondered how they could sell them so cheap . I have been a mechanic , paint and body and welder for 40 years , so I get suspecious when something is real cheap . Good luck with the brake conversion . What part of Florida are you in ? Not too far from you , I'm in Mobile .

    Hey Mike,

I'm, in south Florida - the West Palm Beach area about 40 miles north of Ft Lauderdale. It's tough finding help and parts down here. The average car is 2 years old - we live in the land of leased cars.

There was a thread done by "Flyinbuick" on 10/12/04 in the Bench about Inline Tube . I remembered it and found it I don't know how to link to it but several folks here were unhappy with their customer support . I didn't go all the way through it but try a search for "Inline Tube" and check it out .
The Parts Place Inc. also sells kits and one of our members here , maybe could possibly shed some light on their products .
Maybe Inline got the message , again I don't know . I guess I don't know alot .:Dou:
Hey,,,, ! Ain't that the "Shinola" man comin' ???

I bought my kit from Mike Garcia, who sells under the name 'mgchevyparts' on eBay. The kit uses all factory A-Body GM parts, so no cobbling together of a system and you know exactly what you need when you buy brake pads or calipers later on. It fits just like a factory one would, 'cuz it's the factory setup. Total install time was about 2 1/2 hours. I had power discs, so I bought Mike's kit that had everything except the booster, prop valve and master cylinder. Price for the kit was $275, and then I bought a new master cylinder from O'Reilly's. Brakes work flawlessly, and are a huge improvement over stock drums. I didn't put in a new prop valve, either, and the car stops very well without it. I highly recommend Mike's kit.
