    Hi everyone,

I'm going to remove the rear seat out of my 71 Buick Skylark as I need to change the rear package tray. Is it possible to just remove the top part of the rear seat (without taking out the bottom) and if so how do I go about removing it?

    Hey Chris -
You have to remove both parts of the rear seat.
I believe the upper portion of the seat is held in place by two bolts at the bottom, which fasten the seat to the floor pan - to gain access to these bolts you must remove the lower portion of the seat. Push the lower seat towards the rear of the car and lift it out of the two retainers on iether side of the seat bottom. :TU:

    >>Thanks for the info! I was hoping I could get around taking the entire back seat out but I guess I have no choice.

It's really very easy to do, a quick job to remove seat and back.

Maybe you'll have to remove the rear side panel in order to clear for remove and install the package tray ... at least that's what i've done .

    >>Hi Donald. Yeah, after taking out the corner pieces under the rear window I realized there was no way the old package tray was coming out unless I removed the rear side panels as well. I hope to have everything complete this week and then I'll post a pic.

also the rear side panels. use the old package tray as a template for the new one.
i replace mine (72 gs) a couple of months ago. the mesh cover had rotted due to the sun. cutting & fitting the new tray takes time.
    purchased from legendery .

    Job's done

Well, the package tray is finally installed. Needed some help from an upholstery shop in getting the rear side panels off but it's all done. The package tray I got from Year One was the Sandalwood color with the predrilled speaker holes. The Tray they shipped me was a couple of shades lighter than my original but I think it looks even better because it matches the rear seat better. The package tray insulation had to be cut under the sepaker holes and 6x9 speakers were installed in the trunk. Now I plan on having a CD player/radio either installed under the original radio (not taking it out) or inside the glove compartment.

Do you have any picture of your package tray ? It the "Deluxe" tray I assume with the speakers holes , that's what I'm planning to buy later this summer

    >>Hi. Yes, this package tray is the "deluxe" one that Year One sells (I did have to wait a while for it to arrive - on back order for about 8 weeks). Great quality and it does have the speaker holes. Definitely worth buying. I'll take a pic of the tray this week and will post it here for you to see.

    >>Yes, this is correct and the new package tray with speaker holes also has the net or "mesh" covering.

    Hi,

Here is the pic of my newly installed deluxe package tray from Year One. The original package tray was darker (closer in color to the rear defroster) but I like the lighter sandalwood better because it is a better match to the rear seats. The underneath package tray insulation also had to be cut below the speaker holes so the sound can travel clearly directly from the 6x9 speakers mounted below in the trunk.

Thank you for the picture !

Do you have to drill it for the defrost or it was pre-drilled ? My car did not have rear defrost ...

    >>Hi Donald. The package tray had to be cut for the defroster so you will be fine if you order one of the trays. If you have the original rear plastic corners under the rear window be careful when removing them as they are very brittle - my passenger side piece broke when I was removing it. I would up buying new reproductions from Duane on the board and they are of excellent quality.
