My 1966 Skylark has factory air conditioning, but it hasn't been used since 1999. At that time, I replaced the compressor, the accumulator, the condenser, the evaporator and spent mucho bucks on freon fillings. When it kept losing freon after that, I just stopped trying to fix it.

Now its five years later, and I want to revisit the problem. Do people still repair freon units anymore (is freon even available at any price?), or do they go for a R134A conversion. If they convert, is it worthwhile to pay a shop, or DIY?

Can the stock compressor model do the job, (I've heard they aren't as cold with R134A) or are there larger R134A aftermarket units that can be used ?
