Replacing the rusty fuel lines in a 72 Riviera

    Righto..

Next thing on the list is for me to get my fuel lines replaced.

These ones are badly rusted and I want to get the car treated underneath against rust. To do this they start by blasting all the old rust off with a very high pressure hose.

I doubt the ones under there would take the blasting so I'm going to replace them.

Any ideas what I need to buy exactly? I've been told by the very helpful staff at RightStuffDetailing.com that they do a 3/8 main and a 1/4 inch fuel line in both the original steel and stainless as well but they have it listed as for a 71 Riv. He has a seperate kit for the 73. I'm guessing the 72's fuel lines are the same as the 71 rather than the 73.. Or am I wrong?

How many do I need to buy of each to have it totally replaced? Four?

I've no idea how big a job it is either. I'm a total novice at that sort of thing but I am learning bit by bit. Is it something I should try myself or would it make more sense to just book it into a garage?

    Thanks in advance! Again!

Ever considered an LPG conversion ?
It will save you a lot of money, and you can leave the petrol lines for what they are.

You can have it installed here in the Netherlands for under 1500 Sterling.

I may do if I start doing much mileage in it.. At the moment I just drive to work (1 mile away) and back and the occasional football match when Bolton are playing at home.

There's something nice about filling it with premium and firing up the engine though :)

Oh.. another thing you might be able to help me with.. Which light bulbs are which in the back? I bought bulbs for the brakes, cornering, tail lights and turn signals which all seem to be the same (12V 32/3CP) but the parking light bulbs I bought have tinted glass (12V 24/2.2CP). Rock auto's reference numbers were 1157 and 1157NA respectively.

The car at the moment is just fitted out with clear bulbs in all the back fittings.. I'm going to change the lot to make sure it's not incorrect bulbs giving me my turning light timing problems but I'm nnot sure which one is the parking light or indeed what a parking light is.. Must be an american term.

1157's are clear, tail, stop, turn. For the rear.
Should have 1156 for back up lights.
1157 NA are amber in color. (NA, Natural Amber.) For the front turn.

The cornering lamps were a 1293 bulb, but they are hard to find. A 1195 is supposed to be the equivalent.
I have used 1156 bulbs in them before I knew better. Not as bright as the correct bulb, but do work.

Parking lights refer to the first setting when you pull the knob out. It turns everything but the head lights on.

Did you order bulbs from Rock Auto ?
You can buy the same bulbs at any service station in the UK, or go to Halfords.

Parking lights are the ones in the front bumper, combined with the turn signals.

In the Netherlands amber driving lights (as we call them) are forbidden, so I use regular white ones at the front and back.
(only when I go for my MOT, I replace them for amber bulbs the minute I leave the MOT station)

Aaah.. Okay that clears a few things up, thanks both of you!

We call parking lights "side lights" over here. Thanks for clearing that one up Dale!

Yeah I got them from Rock Auto as it was the only surefire way of making sure I got the right bulbs at the time. I've been told the wrong bulbs might be in which could be causing the indicator (turn signal) timings are all screwed up when the headlights are on. They vary from flashing once a second, once every 5 seconds or sometimes once every ten seconds. :Dou:

It's really dangerous as the red turn signal confuses people enough already over here. To have it flash slowly leads to people overtaing me when I'm turning which isn't good when it happens on the passenger side!

Now I know which are the right ones it's easy enough to save cash getting them here now. :)

I've often re-lamped a car after I buy it just so I know all the bulbs are good and bright.
How about the flasher relay? You may want to replace it also.

Don't worry it confuses them over here as well.

    Sweet,

Anyone know what part number or type of flasher turn signal (not the emergency flasher) relay I need please? It's the one attached to the harness above the fuse board, not the one attached to the fuse board itself.

The one in it at the moment is a

    littelfuse inc
    SAE J590B
    323 -12V 3 Lamps

Going to pick one up today once I know what I need. I've just swapped all the bulbs.

This is from a local chain of auto parts stores I use. For what it's worth.

I'm surprised that a flashing red turn signal would be confusing to some people in your part of the world.
Seeing an amber turn signal on the rear of a car wouldn't be confusing here. (Maybe I am giving people too much credit.)
I mean, a flashing turn signal is a flashing turn signal, right?

Here people are used to seeing both red brake lights on and a flashing amber if turning.
On the Riv they see a red brake light on one side on and the red brake light on the other side flashing.More often than not they think its an electrical problem.

Yeah.. It can make things quite hairy. Especially as I still don't have a passenger side mirror!

It is about the very first split second; For Europeans: when it is orange it is a blinker; if it is red it's a braking sign.

    That makes sense.

I've gotten so used to having a passenger side mirror on my daily drivers, that when I do drive my Riviera I am always looking over at a mirror that doesn't exist.
I can see where it would be a bigger problem when driving on the left side of the road in a left hand drive car.

Too bad no one reproduces them. When they do show up for sale they go for big money as you all know.

    :beers2:
