I was wondering if anyone was using a reusable oil filter(Oberg, Omni, System 1).

Is there anything that I should know before I install one.

    Thanks

    Mike,
I'm using the System1, it's a great filter, very easy to clean and reuse. I bought the short version from Jegs and it's about the same size as the stock AC filter. It's supposed to be less restrictive than any paper filter.

System 1 oil filter, best filter that I have ever used, highly recomended, some say they can buy lots of filters for the cost of the System 1. However, you can open this filter up whenever you need too and have a look see without losing expensive oils, see whats inside, wash it out and your set for a long time. trust me this is the filter you want for your buick ! My eng. was built in 1998 by T/A Performance Products and has NEVER been down for any reason, and this is because that this filter is in place for periodic checks and break in checks on new parts. thanks to T/A for there dedication to quality performance and expert machine work.

Aluminum block in the future, count me in for at least one!

would it be possiable for you to take a picture with the filter taken apart, and post them? I have worked with an Oberg filter which is a flat screen, 4 bolts and it apart.
It is the BEST idea, to be able to see what is going on inside your engine. With out having to cut open a regular filter, and look through all of the plets to see whats is going on.
How messy is it when you check/clean it?

    Thanks

Mike, the System 1 filter is a steel pleated filter screen, you can open just the end and remove the filter or you can unsrew the entire filter clean up iin a few minutes, you only lose the amount of oil left in the filter housing which is nominal, sorry I don't have a camera to take pics.

How tight are the pleats? Is it easy to inspect the pleats to see what is going on inside the engine. With the Oberg or the Moroso Omni filter there is a flat screen that is sandwiched between two alum. halfs the oil flows through. Remove 4 bolts and it comes apart.

I was thinking about one of these two and mounting it were the battery sat since it is now in the trunk. Would there be any problems using a remote adapter and a foot or so of 3/4 tubing?

Bruce will you be going to Norwalk on July 31? I would like to see the set up. We met at the Buick days at Norwalk, I was the one trying to see the GS hood, doors, and other stuff.

    Thanks

Mike.....I'll try and get a pic of the pleats of my System1 filter later today. They are not tight (IMO) and easily viewed for inspection.

The spot where the battery once was is a great area for a remote filter mount. Here is a pic of my long System1 filter with Moroso remote and 3qt Accumulator all tied together with -10AN Russell Endura fittings. A one-way check valve (small red canister in return line to engine) is required for this system to work properly. This is in my '70 GS455 conv....

Bruce, I considered the System 1 but they said it had to be mounted vertically. Does it have an anti-drainback valve?

    Bruce,
I called system1 awhile back and asked about the anti-drainback valve and the stock mounting position of the Buick oil filter. Their response was "you don't need it". They offered to send me a free one, and I accepted. When I got it, I installed it, and noticed no difference whatsoever. It goes between the filter cannister and the cone. It is simply a rubber ring that flaps over the drainback holes at the engine end of the filter. System1 said it would increase the restriction of the filter somewhat.(low restriction is one of the filter strengths). In the end, I left it off, and haven't had a problem at all. My oil pressure comes right up, no problem.

    Larry, thanks
Does your car sit for extended periods?
I wonder if with the System 1 one could eliminate the bypass and filter ALL the oil ALL the time.

my filter has the anti dainback valve, no problems for me, always good oil pressure, the pleats are not real "tight" as Kerry mentioned, allows for good visability and easy cleaning.

My car sits for sometimes as much as 2 weeks. With the weather we've been having, that is becoming the norm. Supposedly, there is only a 1 psi drop across the filter. Don't know if the bypass is open in that case.

Thanks guys, I might order one. I like the low restriction, I was just worried about speed of priming.
I wonder if the latemodel 3800 vertical arrangement could be adapted or is a sideways filter not that big of a deal.

Does the System 1 incorporate a magnet?
