Ring and pinion set-up.

Call me anal, but I like to have my ducks in a row. A friend of mine has a used ring and pinion set he wants me to put in his 8.5 . However, there is no pinion depth stamped into the pinion gear. As we all know, all the tolerances and set-up measurements are based off pinion depth. I'm not real crazy about setting this thing up 8 times and then only going by the gear pattern. In my opinion, checking the gear pattern is the same as using plastigage... a checking operation, not a definitive measurement. Thoughts? Advise?

FYI, its going into a 500+ hp/ft lb car and will likely see some abuse.

    Thanks in advance.

I personal never go buy NUMBERS. They are scribed in by a human.... ALWAYS go by the pattern worn into the used gear (especially) or on a new gear lapped in by the machine.

Good luck with the number deal...

IE that would be like going to the drag race track and dynoing the ET it sould run and then finding out it runs faster or slow...OF COURSE it will - Numbers on paper compared to real world.

Also pattern will show a defective gear where if you just put the gear in with dpeth check and do not run the pattern you will never see the defect of a tooth or run out of the ring if it has it.
Slap that Marking compound on and go to town. :)
