Re: Roll Call!!!!! - defeated by clutch issues

Roberta - I forget just how YELLOW those GSXs are!
It would be nice to see your red 4spd again.
Dave H - good luck and God's speed in your recovery.
Jim Lerum - shoot me a PM and let me know if you're driving out on Thursday, and if so the time.

Well, I was defeated by the man pedal. That darn clutch fork pivot ball is too short (Tim C - you were right!) I couldn't get the clutch to disengage!:af: Even with the pedal to the floor. No way to adjust it longer with the trans in the car. I've been away from the wife for too many weekends so it was just too much to take the tranny back out. (Jim Mattison will have a good laugh - so will some others....)
The car is 40 miles from me and I left it last Sunday. It runs - just kind of rough when you can't disengage the engine! Hopefully the GM truck pivot ball will be long enough.
So, a 69' 428 HO 4spd GP will have to make its debut in 2011. I always wanted to bring the car in odd years - I need some excuse!

So, the H/O is the back-up car, and I did wrench this weekend on:
Eyebrow molding - how do you guys put those push nuts on?!?
I tried a 3/8" socket - that sort of worked. Not much room where the molding goes to use opposable digits.
Pulled radiator due to leak - the leak was due to a lower radiator hose tightened too much - kinked the heck out of the neck. Hammer, brass drift, c-clamp, vise grips - I was able to round the neck back out more or less. Holding for now!
Changed from Shell Rotella (all I could find in June) to Amsoil 10W-40 with zinc and other additives for the older cams.
The big work was new Lunati valve springs! That was a learning experience but the car runs MUCH better, so I should be better than low 15s at 89!

Now if I can just get the tach part of the tic-toc-tach to work!

Someone (Paul P) posted about driveshaft hoops. I bought one from Summit - the basic cheap one. I mounted it way forward and there was interference on the driveshaft. I had to move it back, beyond the floor pan reinforcement. It fits there, but it is technically too far back, I think it is 7 to 9" but it should not be farther back than 6" from the front u-joint.
Then it hangs up on the lip of the trailer. It needs some different holes to make the hoop portion fit better.
I think I will just put it in when I get to the track. It sure hurt to drill into a virgin floorpan!
What IS best is that I will be racing - and seeing friends again. PARTY!

Make sure you run clear water in your system, in case you have a leak at the track. Antifreeze can shut it down for hours...

You sure you have the right throwout fork on the GP? That would do the same thing you're experiencing...

I drove a Corvair from Philadelphia to Michigan years ago with the clutch locked in place. My brother put the clutch disc in backwards and it wouldn't release. Jan was snowed in, so didn't want to tear it down to fix it. Had to start it in gear, clutchless shift it with a toe wiggle, then kick it into neutral when I came to a stop. Was OK most of the way (locked in 4th gear), then hit a blizzard in the Pa. mountains that closed the turnpike for a day. Had to choose between beer or food for almost a full day as I was running out of money fast...no credit cards back then...guess which one won?

    Dave,
I still have the original shift fork - it seemed the same as the Lakewood.
Once I get the trans out (fun) I'll be able to experiment.

I'll be checking the cooling system after every run.....
After thinking this over, distilled water and water wetter will be installed.
I would really hate to slime the track down!

Man -don't say that to much around here!!!! yah if you run the drive shaft loop that goes between the trans mount it would of been even worse. It hits the floor fast because the slope of the floor pan, You can also do the unthinkable (Dimple the floor)
    Good luck

Just got a call from Rusty, he's about 3 hours out from our place and loaded with tires! After a nap over here we're heading out tomorrow morning with Rusty, my Chevy II and picking up Gary Place with his beautiful and quick, 1969 Chevelle SS 396/375. The three of us will see you tomorrow night at the always Comfortable Inn.:TU:

aw man, I'm tired. just loaded the car and some stuff into the trailer after thrashing all day. and for the last several days actually. I was thinking to myself, why am I doing this. There's no money or prizes involved. But it's for the love of the event. Hands down this is the best thing out there.

I've been fighting intermitent electrical issues lately and they really started acting up on friday. So I ended up yanking the crane xr-i out as I'm wondering if thats the cause of my problems and trying a couple different sets of points and even another distributor. Now she wouldn't rev past 4K. I then took the pertronix off my W-31 and put that on the GT-37, and she seems ready to rock n roll. We'll see what these next few days bring me. I was at the 11th hour and about to sh!tcan the whole thing and leave the car at home.

Meeting up with Dr. Munson at 1:30pm and heading north. See everyone there and hope everyone has a safe trip.

We are ready for a mid morning departure after getting the kids off to school. We are driving the H/O on some back roads along Lake Michigan towards a lunch at Rosie's, then by the track for a quick "tire check" as we pass by, then on to Alma.
Tami has perfected the Jello Jiggler Race Car shots. She used I think 3 half gallons of vodka making somewhere north of 200 in various flavors/colors!
Hey there Tim C, maybe we should only bring those to the Christmas party next year...unbreakable for sure. By the way,you ever get the relay you needed for Rhonda's car? If not let me know and I'll look around in the morning.

Oh man, it's gonna be fun. :TU: See ya'll tomorrow,
    Paul

I kid you not. That is the first thing my daughter thought off when she found out I was going drag racing. She's scared for life!

Sounds like an episode of Little House on the Prairie.:)
I don't think you'll have to worry about the Indians in central Michigan -- unless you walk into the casino with the car's title in hand.
