Hi, I have read before of people using an s10 master cylinder for their manual brakes. What I can't find is what model year the cylinder it is. Thanks
I think the reason people are using S-10 masters for their cars is the oversized bore on the piston. There are aftermarket reservoirs that have larger master cylinder pistons. I bought a power disc brake master and booster for my wife's '65 el camino, and the bore on the master was 1 1/8 instead of the usual 7/8 or 1 inch. It'll throw you into the dashboard when you hit the pedal if you're not paying attention. As for the S-10 master, the best suggestion I can give you is to remove your master cylinder, bring it to your local parts store, and match up the mounting bolt pattern and fitting sizes. Be very cautious and observant when comparing these items side by side. On the backside of the piston, there are different depths for the pushrod that pushes the piston. This DOES matter. Also, the S-10 master is probably going to be metric, as far as threads go. Do a little homework, and if the S-10 master isn't worth the hassle, order a master with a bigger piston bore from an aftermarket shop online. Good Luck. -Josh
i'm looking at doing this same thing on my 63 special. i have a booster and myster cyl from an 80's s10 sitting in the garage (from a past s10 that is now gone) so it'll be a free up grade if it will work. would i be able to put a proportioning valve on it? or should i just order the scarebird brackets, and do the switch?
For manual brakes you want a 1 inch bore and no larger. You should be able to find a GM ported 1 inch bore master at any parts store. If your changing from power to manual you will need a manual rod. If you remove the booster you will need a rod that goes from the brake pedal to the master. If you want help PM me and I will fix you up with a new master and rod. Marcel.
try this link. If you use a 1 1/8 in bore you'll have a hard pedal as if your booster has failed. Power brakes in your Buick have a 1 1/18 bore. http://www.mpbrakes.com/uploads/documents/mcdimensions1pdf.pdf
well looks like i can't fit the s10 parts in unless i just bolt the master strait up. no room for the booster. can i do that?
you can buy a smaller booster. They sell 7 inch booster for hotrod and streetrod applications, and they work well when transplanting a bigger engine into a small engine compartment, or where clearance issues arise. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/7-CH...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories This is obviously just an example, and you don't need a chrome setup, but if you look around, you can find them pretty reasonably. -Josh
