    1970Stage1 Why Go Quietly?

I went to an "old stuff only" junkyard in northern colorado, and my findings were too sad. There were eleven 70-72 Skylark/GS's in there. Only three of which were 4-doors, one 2-door post, six were 2-door hardtops, and one Ragtop. You'll never believe this, but there was a 70 GS 455 convertible in there amung the rest. The car was originally fire red with a black interior and black top. It was stripped to nothing, and the only way I new it was a 455 car was by the motor mounts, and the 455 imprint on the fender where emblem used to be. Kitty corner from that was a 71 GS 350, also stripped pretty good but a lot was still there. Sorry guys, the hood and grille were long gone. The only good thing about the trip was the fact that I got the split bench seat I've been looking for. Who in thier right mind would junk a 70 GS455, let alone a convert.............Oh, so thats what drugs can do to you? I never would've guessed.

It is sad, but many cars made this trip in the '70s and '80s. There is a junkyard around here with 2 '70 GS455s, a '72 GS350, and a '68 GS350 LEFT. There were many more years ago. They are all beyond repair, but sad sights just the same. Remember though, there are only so many GS hoods and grills out there. Some of these "rougher" cars had to die so others could live on. The sad part is some of the stupid reasons why these cars went to the yard in the first place; needing a tune-up, minor fender-bender, etc. That's the sad part. Just do your part by saving that '72 GS350 from the buick junkyard in the sky!:TU:

    70 GS

I didn't get any pics, but it is a neat place. I've loved junkyards ever since I was a little kid, and it's a treat to go to one that has nothing but old stuff. I could've taken pics, but I don't have a digital cam, and there are weeds above my head. This guy opened his yard in 1968, so a lot of his inventory has been there since the mid 70's. That GS 455 Rag went in there in 1979 and has been rotting into the ground ever since. My dad went in that yard for parts years ago, and he scratched his intials into the RQ of the GS 455 with the date "8-4-81." That car has been in there for 22 years now, and the sad remains will get crushed soon. I'm going back there this Tuesday to gather more parts I need, and swipe all the cowl tags off of the 68-72 skylarks I can find. There is one 72 Skylark Custom 2-door in that yard that I became attatched to. Its a Lime Mist car, that has a Black vinyl top, and Black interior. I want soooo badly to drag it out of its soon-to-be grave. Its a nice car, and I want to smack the idiot who put it there. Hey, the perfect car to crush is the ford mustang. Which would you rather have, a 72 mustang or a 72 skylark? Hmmmm, tough choice.

Why would you swipe the cowl tags off all the old Buicks in the yard?

Rick, Because you could make a profit off of selling a skylark with GS Tags.:puzzled: I am in this same senario right now I have a 70 GS that is un repairable but all the options are in premo shape to include the engine and driveline. I also have a 70 skylark. These to car are built within on week of each other in 11/69 at the same plant. So here is my option. I am gonna clone a skylark. 95% GS, 5% skylark. It will be a skylark with a GS drivetrain. Just my oppinion.

I don't have a problem with a rebodied GS. Saving the cars is more important than how much of the car is is skylark or GS.

    Go for it...

I'm all for saving the cars, and I'm definately all for the whole cloning process (lord knows I'll never be able to afford a real GS), but I think there's a point where a line gets crossed... and swapping cowl and vin tags just might be it.

    Is that legal?

Oh yeah Phil, you're right on the money. I'm a 15 year old kid running a car cloning operation (out of my parents house) making phony GS's out of skylarks. I like collecting these tags for some reason, and decoding them. I HATE re-bodied cars. If it was never a GS from the factory, don't make it one. If a GS is soooo far gone you have to re-body it, then you should just save other yourself (and other people) the trouble and just crush it. -Kevin

Kevin, I was explaining my situation as I would love to do it but it is unethical if I was to profit from this venture if I ever sold the car. Or something was to happen to me and my wife sold the car and it came back to get here. as for collecting the tags go for it are you gonna collect the body tags or both vin and body tag?

also as for the swipeing the tags maybe you could have explained that it was for data research or collecting old data.

my only comment is rather than dwelling on junkers that are far too gone to save, worry about all the cars in the ads and ebay that are getting close to "junker" stage and save them. There's plenty of skylarks out there that have a lot of potential. So they're not real GS's...........big deal. After all, the only real difference is a bunch of numbers and letters stamped into metal tags and such. Take any skylark and add a 455, change the hood, some mods here and there, and ya got yourself a GS. :Brow:

Maybe you won't profit as much if selling it..........but so what?

The important thing is that another 30 years from now, people will say:

"Wow! A 1972 Skylark?! What's this strange material here?"

"yeah, it's this rare stuff called steel."

    "Stee- ahl?"

Bond Title is one way it could be done. I am in the process of getting a bond title for my 70 skylark as the guy I bought the car from lost the signed title to get it transfered in his name. You pay a monitary amount they bond the car for 3 yrs in case the old owner comes back to get it. After three yrs your good to go! There are some more details but that is one option thats available in texas. Not sure for other states.
