    Hi, a quick question

Hi, I have a 340 ci engine with a 2 barrel, I want to upgrade to a 4 barrel intake manifold along with some other extras, some people say the intake from a 300 wont fit and some say it will, I know the 215 intake is definitely narrower, but there seems to be a bit of confusion over the 300 and 340. I have an original 1966 Buick service manual with drawings and specification for both engines, (I can lay one drawing over the other and they are a match) the only difference in the spec is the 340 has a longer stroke, some people agree and some dont. I have measured my 2barrel 340 intake across the top at the back and it is 30cm wide, ( I will try to attach a photo of this), could you please measure your 300 4barrel intake and let me know how wide it is, thanks very much for your time and any input on this, cheers Louis

Louis, The 340 has a taller block to accomodate the the extra .10 inch stroke and the intakes do not interchange.

    slaplink, Thanks for the reply:)

are all the threads intact (i.e. carb bolts, thermo housing bolts etc.) Is there any water corrosion around the intake ports?

That's right Louis. The 300 intake is narrower than the 340.

    Thanks to all

    Hi Folks,
Thanks for the replies (thanks again! Greg) I knew most of what you said from the Buick books that I have gathered, but it is great and very valuable to get information from you guys on pieces that I have not actually seen (only read about). I am resigned to the fact now that Buick only made the 340ci in 1966 and part of 1967.

What I had been aiming at was that it was the same block with internal changes, I had a 1977 toyota celica twin cam 1500cc and by changing the crank, rods and pistons from another toyota engine(which lengthened the stroke) took it up to 1800cc in the original block without a rebore. But I'm with you now.

I have seen one or two 4barrel 340ci intakes in the states but the shipping cost to the UK is a killer due to the weight. I'll keep hunting around the UK for one or may just go with the original and keep an ear open for a 425 or 455 as I may have a better chance of finding one of these to rebuild. I am also still looking at making up plates to adapt the narrower alluminium intake to fit, although I hav been told that it may not be worth doing due to the port sizes on the 300 intake.

One more question, I have seen a carb adaptor plate which allows you to bolt a 4barrel carb on to a 2barrel intake, would there be any gains in doing this or is it a waste of time?, anyway, thanks for all your time and assistance, I'm sure I'll be back to pester you all again soon, cheers Louis

    one last question, honest!

One quick question for Greg, as he has manifolds for everything (or anyone else whose interested or knows), just to check that I've got this right finally. There are three different sizes (widths) for intake manifolds, the 215 is the narrowest and uses a gallery cover, the 300 is slightly wider, and the 340 is wider still, as I said my 340 intake is 30cm wide, if I remember right the 300 intake is 27cm wide (correct me if I am wrong) and I don't know how wide the 215 is but I will find a Rover one over here and measure it and the 350 is a totally different block (water passages etc) but still uses a lot of interchangeable parts.

I'm looking at this thinking, "sheesh how did I get so involved in all this, all I wanted was a 4 barrel instead of a two". But all this info is very interesting and will be very useful to me and I can pass it on to others who ask the same questions, I will maybe put all the info from my books and from you guys together onto a page , get you guys to give it a once over and then stick it on the site in the general info or Frequently asked Questions page, cos I'm relatively new to this site, but I imagine you guys spend a lot of time answering the same questions from people like me, let me know what you think, cheers again and thanks for all the info, I'll keep you posted with updates of my car and some photos when it's a bit prettier, cheers Louis:cool:
