Just wondering if anyone's sold a car on consignment with a classic car dealer, or knows anyone who has. I'm interested in what kind of experience it was, and what advice they might have. THX.

Sold a 73 Riviera through Streetside Classics and it was a positive experience. Took six months but we lowered the price and I got what I wanted out of the deal.
Sold 3 through Classical Gas Motors in Arlington Tx and excellent experience. Again, took 4-6 months but deals came through and I got the money I wanted. Hope that helps.

I'd be very careful about doing it. I had been looking for a `71 El Camino for several months and came across some pretty shady dealers/brokers. One of them I called that was only about an hour from here told me he would contact the owner to see if it was still available. When I asked what he meant by that, particularly because he told me he had it consigned, he said I had to give him a deposit and then he would give me the contact information of the owner. No way am I going to do that so even though I was pretty interested in that car, I no longer was. I had to wonder how the guy was ever going to get his car sold but I also suspected it was a scam, particularly because the dealer was in Illinois and the car was supposedly in Tennessee, although it had Georgia plates on it in the ad. I did end up finding the car I wanted on craigslist. My advice would be to try and sell the car yourself and forget about handing over some of the proceeds of the sale to a dealer/broker.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

Like any type of business, there are good and bad dealers. Research and references are the best way to sort them.

Wasn't there a thread on here a while back on this? Definitely be careful.

We purchased and sold thru Gateway Classic Cars in the St. Louis area. It was a good experience for us. Their advertising reaches world wide.
