I have removed the 350 from my car to rebuild it. I have another stock Buick 350 in there now that only has 90,000 miles. So I'm not in a rush to get the original back in, I want it to make around 300 hp and more torque. My question is should I send my 76 heads to Jim W. or get some older heads done up by him?

    76 heads

actually i believe the 76 heads have slightly larger exhaust valves the say 73 and down.not sure what year the change happened.other than that heads for 350 pretty much same.
just pick up a set of his alum big block heads and look great.
    good luck :TU:

Are the 76 heads junk, or are they worth putting money into?

    Re: 76 heads

Huh? From reading your previous post I think you're referring to a 455.

You can use the '76 heads as they're isn't too much difference from the earlier ones except for the combustion chamber, which would probably change when/if the heads get ported. If you only want 300 hp out of the engine, a stock rebuild with a mild cam will take care of that. I would find a well known shop that's local.

Rob, I think there is a water passage issue that must be plugged. I think Jim Burek mentioned it to me a while back. Maybe Jim could pipe in. I may be wrong but I seem to remmember talking to him about it. Other than that no Issues that I know of.

Thanks guys, that answers my questions. I will get some mild porting and maybe some larger valves put in.

    350 heads

the 350 heads also head the water passage change like the big blocks in 72 .something with emmision smog stuff.i think jim could plug them if you need to use on older block.with jim bureks new single plane intake hes working on you could make a pretty stout engine, probably more than 300.if you can use newer style cap screw rods, which would be standard in a 76 engine.stronger and arp makes good rod bolts for.:Do No:

Yeah, I know 300 hp is not hard to get but I'm not looking for a 600 hp motor. Higher than 300 would be great but I want a high $/hp ratio. Thanks

If your looking for a 600 HP motor, then you need to realize that motor will be a big block.

The 350 Buick heads also had a water passage change in 73. Unlike the 455 heads, there are 2 water passages that have to be dealt with on the 350. These holes are oval shaped and between the 2 center cylinders, they need to be rounded out and plugged, or use the heads on a 73 or newer block with the double scallops to cover the holes.

Your right Adam, but I don't think he is thinking about a motor in that budget range.

I am building a 494 street supercharged blower motor now, and even being supplied the rotating assembly and the block with girdle installed, it's still a 15K proposition, when all is said and done.

then again.... 750HP is the goal... :TU: :beer

I'd like to see the details on that. Centrifugul or roots?

I guess I missed that the first time. Sorry for going off-topic Sean.

Oh, I am sure once we get a handle on it, there may be a post or two about it.. :pp

    Quickly..

ATI D1 SC Supercharger, non intercooled, expect 6-10 PSI of boost to reach our goal HP

STG 2 SE alum heads (BPG specials with our upgrade)

494 with Billet rods, stock crank, and special custom dished JE pistons.. 8.5-1 compression ratio

SPX intake- Holley 4150 carb yet to be determined exactly which one.

SRE oil pan- custom short sump one that Steve did up for me with an internal pickup.

SRE Fabricated valve covers, with custom engraving. -- we should have a contest for the design to be engraved.. should say "Supercharged', "Buick 494", and" TSP" in smaller letters in the design..

Exhaust heavy cam for the supercharger, possibly a 290-08H on a wider lobe center.

    TA Timing cover

76 block, filled 2/3 with hardblock, Block Girdle

TA timing cover, and everything polished and pretty..

    TA 2 1/8 primary A body headers

This build is prolly 30- 45 days out yet, and parts are coming in and we are doing the heads now.. also I have a couple other motors in line in front of it.

And of course, we will flog this one on the dyno, and do a bunch of tuning on it.

Home for the motor is a 70 GS.

I think I got the info I need, which was should I put $ into my 76 heads or into 69-70 ones. I haven't heard any strong reasons why the 76 heads with work couldn't help make a 300-400 hp motor. Anyone think I'm wrong?
