Least im thinking thats what ya call it... Anyway what is it that makes a column shift stop and lock in requiring the lever to be pulled back to move out of that gear. and where is it located and can it be modified. Id like the shift lever to lock into second gear position as well as D. The Lesabre build will be using the stock column shift with a Rev Man Valve Body and Id like to not go directly to 3 from 1. I know its gonna take some practice.

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

The rooster comb in the TH400 is to only provide positive feel for shifting into each position with a bit of resistance (doubling the roller spring makes that "feedback" much stronger), but the column has a square toothed detent plate that provides the "lock", requiring "lifting/pulling the gear selector to overcome the detent in the plate.

This is one for a Powerglide, but one can be made for most A-body cars. Pull yours apart, and modify as needed.

I read a year ago, where someone did the mod on a Buick, and it had pics with measurements on the detents.

I have a tilt column so it might be something I dont want to deal with.

I've repaired 100's of columns back in the 80's-90's from all of the thefts. In my opinion, tilt columns are much easier to work on than the straight columns.
